Changes are coming to intersection of southbound I-5 and Slater Road beginning Aug. 29

The compact roundabout will be removed and a stop sign will be installed temporarily at the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Slater Road.

You should expect to see construction activities at the intersection of the southbound Interstate 5 on- and off-ramps with Slater Road in Ferndale beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, August 29. Our contractor crews will remove the compact roundabout and temporarily return the intersection to the original intersection structure.

This work includes single lane closures on Slater Road and the closure of the southbound I-5 on-ramp. A signed detour will be in place for the ramp closures.

This temporary intersection configuration will be in place for up to six weeks until a larger, multi-lane roundabout is installed. Please plan ahead for delays and seek alternative routes if needed.

OPEN!! SR 20/North Cascades Highway is now open between milepost 148 and 157

Wildfire operations closed SR 20 on Aug. 4, and it was forced to remain closed after an Aug. 11 mudslide. Now that the North Cascades Highway is open again, we'll have pilot car operations to support fire crews as they continue working in the Easy Fire area.

Easy fire

Thank you for your patience; it takes a while to clean up 7,000 tons of mud spread 10 feet deep across the roadway. A huge shout out to the crews who worked hard to reopen the roadway.

This fire season has been a long one, and we are so grateful for the work of those involved in supporting these fires, from the fire fighting to the team collaboration and communication during the cleanup.

Mudslides and debris flows are a common side effect from burn scars left by wildfires. Learn more about burn scars and flash flooding here: weather.gov/sew/burnscar

Let our Paint Map help you through a busy double-trouble travel weekend

Paint map shows construction and events around Washington state Aug. 23-25.

If you’re driving to or through King County this weekend, prepare for trouble – make it double! We're working hard to protect our roads from devastation and unite our efforts to keep everyone moving. With closures of I-405 and State Route 520, concerts and games, and plenty of bridge work, we denounce the evils of work zone collisions and extend our reach to every corner of Washington state.

Northbound I-405 will be closed in Renton, as will both directions of SR 520 between Seattle and Bellevue all weekend. The detours will take some time to get through, so plan ahead.

Heading into Seattle for sports games or concerts? Consider alternate forms of transportation, such as bus, carpooling, light rail or even train.

Visiting the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe? Check out their profile for more info on planning your trip and don’t forget Community Transit has routes directly to the fair and is cheaper than parking.

Remember, our mobile app and real-time travel map are always there for you. Safe travels!

The fall of summer: Check out our travel chart to prepare for your Labor Day weekend travel plans

Travel charts

Before the return of yellow school buses and all things pumpkin spice, many people plan summer festivities over Labor Day. We encourage people to make travel plans now for the popular three-day weekend and expect congestion on most major routes. Travelers also should be alert of wildfire activity and road closures affecting travel plans.

To make the most of your weekend, consult our holiday travel charts to determine the best (and worst) times to go – whether by ferry, vehicle, bus, rail, foot, bicycle or plane. This year’s charts include US 2, I-90 and I-5 between Lacey and Tacoma as well as Bellingham to the U.S.-Canada border.

Most construction will pause over the holiday weekend to help limit congestion. We recommend people go early or late and give themselves plenty of extra time. Crashes or emergency road repairs also can add to travel times. And please Know Before You Go by downloading our app and following our social media accounts and checking out the Travel Center map.

Construction, maintenance and special events

Road work ahead

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.

While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work through the holidays.

Want more information? Visit our real time travel center, where these projects and repairs can be found on our travel map, and download our app to receive alerts directly to your smartphone.
