Mudslide in Easy Fire closure area keeps SR 20 North Cascades closed between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead

WINTHROP – Significant rain on Sunday, Aug. 11, caused a mudslide inside the current Easy Fire closure area (milepost 148-157) of State Route 20/North Cascades Highway. Debris and mud currently cover approximately 100 feet of both lanes of the highway between milepost 152 and 153.

The road remains closed to allow maintenance crews to clear the mudslide. Clearing the debris and mud is estimated to take two days. WSDOT and the Incident Command managing the Easy Fire will reevaluate conditions for reopening once the road has been cleared. There are no detours on U.S. Forest Service roads.

Road closure information is posted in the WSDOT real-time travel center, @wsdot_east and @wsdot_north on X/Twitter and updates will be provided as available. Wildfire information can be found by visiting the Washington State Department of Natural Resources wildfire incident information webpage.
