To be fair...

Paint map 8/8/2024

It's officially fair season in Whatcom County, probably the best time of the year. The Northwest Washington fair kicked off on Thursday, August 8 and will run through Saturday, August 17. Free Fare Days are back! August 8 through 17. Whatcom Transit Authority is offering free rides on weekdays during the fair and added an additional trip on Route 26 (departing Front Street at Fairside at 8:50 pm) brings you back to Cordata Station. RIDE WTA

We have as many construction work zones as there are medal podiums in Paris. Our athletes (workers) are preparing to medal in your favorite events (statewide road work projects) this weekend, including the Cone Toss, Concrete Wheelbarrow Race, Tire Filling, Dirt Digging and Hurdles (I think we’re legally obligated to tell you to not hurdle over road closure signs).

If you’re travelling south this weekend, be patient: SR 520 between Seattle and Bellevue will close weekend-long, in addition to several ramp closures in Seattle and Renton. There are detours in place but expect delays. No need to compete in mental gymnastics: Simply know before you go with our online travel map or mobile app. Don’t forget several cross-state routes are closed due to wildfire activities.

Easy Wildfire, SR 20 North Cascades Hwy update 8-9-24

SR 20 Easy Fire Update

The SR 20/North Cascades Hwy Easy fire will close the road through the weekend as fire crews continue mitigation.

Looking east from the Concrete Airport, smoke from the Easy Fire keeps visibility low. If you're traveling to Omak for the Stampede or headed east this weekend, don't let a road closure wrangle your plans. SR 20 North Cascades Highway remains closed between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (mileposts 148-157) due to fire. Saddle up and plan on taking US 2 or I-90 to steer clear.

During the closure,
Find the closest open rest areas
along northbound and southbound I-5
Stop at Bow Hill, about 30 miles south,
A bit of a drive.
Plan ahead, take your time.
Look out for our crews
and enjoy the ride.

Construction, maintenance and special events

Road work ahead

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.

While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work through the holidays.
