Increased fire activity forces closure of SR 20 North Cascades Highway near Easy Creek trailhead

WINTHROP – Beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 until further notice, at the request of the Incident Command managing the Easy Fire, which has been burning in the Methow Valley since Wednesday, July 17, State Route 20/North Cascades Highway will close in both directions between Granite Creek (milepost 148) and the Easy Creek trailhead (milepost 157) due to increased fire activity. This advisory supersedes the previous travel advisory regarding delays for fire mitigation work beginning Monday, July 22.

The fire’s proximately to the roadway requires that the road must close for the safety of the traveling public and the fire response crews. The closure is in place until further notice. Travelers are reminded that road closures due to wildfire happen quickly and frequently and they should not attempt to go around “ROAD CLOSED” signs.

People can use US 2 or I-90 for cross state travel while this closure is in place.

Road closure information is posted in the WSDOT real-time travel center and @wsdot_north and @wsdot_east on X/Twitter and updates will be provided as available. Wildfire information can be found by visiting the Washington State Department of Natural Resources wildfire incident information webpage.
