Roundabout improvements at southbound I-5 Slater Road interchange near Ferndale begin July 29

Plan for 2-week closure of on- and off-ramps, nighttime I-5 lane reductions

I-5 Slater Rd aerial photo

Beginning at 8 p.m. Monday, July 29, travelers should expect to see construction activities along the southbound Interstate 5 interchange at Slater Road north of Bellingham. Our contractor crews will remove the old, compact roundabout and install a new, larger, two-lane roundabout on Slater Road between Rural Avenue and I-5.

  • From 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday, July 29 and Tuesday, July 30, the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Slater Road will close for intersection improvements.
  • From 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, the Slater Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close these intersection improvements.

Mid-September, you should expect a continuous two-week closure of the southbound I-5 on- and off-ramps at Slater Road. Signed detours will guide people around the ramp closures.

You should expect nightly single-lane closures on southbound I-5 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. throughout until construction completes in early 2025. People traveling in this area should plan extra time and expect delays.

The new, larger roundabout will replace one WSDOT built in 2014 to better manage congestion and improve safety through this corridor. This interim roundabout has successfully and safely kept traffic moving but is due for an upgrade.

SR 546 fish passage road closure reopens a day early

Besties, thank you for your patience during this full closure.

SR 546 Kamm Ditch modifications

Did you see the construction activities on State Route 546, near Northwood Road in Lynden this week?  Contractor crews made modifications to the wing walls of the fish passage structure that runs under SR 546. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, July 29 and Tuesday, July 30, expect to see single lane closure for powerline work.

Fish passage work removes barriers and improves the ability of fish to move through waterways. This project gained an estimated 3,094-feet of habit for native species of fish, like trout and salmon, to more easily navigate the creek.

Iowa Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 in Bellingham to close for guardrail updates Wednesday night

We installed new lighting along the Iowa Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 on Thursday night, July 25, and we’ll be back in Bellingham next week to update the guardrail along the ramp.

To do that work, we will need to close the ramp from 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1. A signed detour will guide people to the Lakeway Drive on-ramp to northbound I-5 during the closure.

Wednesday night’s work will mark the completed of the Northwest Region Breakaway Cable Terminal Replacement project, which updated 24 guardrails and barriers across Whatcom, King and Snohomish counties since work began in March.

With plenty of events scheduled this weekend, let us be your ‘White Horse’ and help get you there

Paint map shows events and major construction scheduled July 26-28 around Washington state.

Just can’t wait to get “On the Road Again” this weekend, Traveller? Use our Paint Map as your “Companion,” whether you’re going to see Chris Stapleton, Sheryl Crow and Willie Nelson Saturday, July 27, at T-Mobile Park, the Torchlight Parde Saturday in downtown Seattle, or anywhere else.

So many events and so much construction, it may seem impossible to avoid getting “Stuck” in traffic. No need for “A Deep Slow Panic,” though. Be prepared, be patient, and recognize there’s a lot of people trying to get where they want to go. Leave early, plan for delays, and consider alternate forms of travel, such as mass transit, carpooling, Ferries or Amtrak Cascades, especially in and out of Seattle on Saturday.

Wherever you’re headed to “Soak Up the Sun” or enjoy some “Sunny Days,” remember that we are right in the heart of wildfire season. There are several highways around the state closed for firefighting operations. While some highways may reopen, others may close on a moment’s notice.

  • Always check our mobile app or real-time travel map before you route plan/head out.
  • Always obey road closure signs and give fire crews plenty of room to work.

Construction, maintenance and special events

Road work ahead

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.

While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work through the holidays.
