Wildfire incident on SR 20/North Cascades Highway named Easy Fire

Wildfire season is here.

Easy Wildfire, SR 20 North Cascades Hwy

This week's incident has been named the Easy Fire and is burning approximately half a mile away from the roadway. If you're head out for an adventure on SR 20/North Cascades Highway this weekend, please plan ahead for the potential of unplanned closures. Do NOT pull off the highway between mileposts 148 and 158 and to remain alert for fire response and maintenance crews in the area. Reminder: wildfires can mean quickly changing conditions and the road may close again depending on fire activity.

SR 546/East Badger Road, near Northwood Road in Lynden to see five-day full road closure, July 21-26

A five-day long closure of SR 546/East Badger Road just east of Northwood Road in Lynden begins this Sunday for fish passage construction. Here’s the scoop:

  • From 6 a.m. Monday, July 22 until 5 a.m. Friday, July 26: Both directions of SR 546/East Badger Road will close between Northwood Road (milepost 3.5) and a bit west of Trapline Road (milepost 6). Travelers can use SR 539/Guide Meridian Road, SR 544/East Pole Road, and SR 9 (or vice-versa) to navigate around the closure points.

Plan for extra travel time along the detour or seek alternate routes. We know a full closure isn’t great, but it allows us to get this work done a lot faster. While the road is closed, we’ll make modifications to the wing walls of the fish passage structure along Kamm Ditch underneath the highway.

Kamm Ditch Fish Passage Work

This week our contractor crews installed a fish exclusion, which protects the fish and the creek during the construction. You may have seen flaggers alternating traffic through a single lane to accommodate this work.

After the full closure wraps on Friday, you should still expect single lane alternating traffic closures will continue through the end of July. Construction is expected to wrap up before the NW Washington Fair.

Construction, maintenance and special events

Road work ahead

We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.

While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work through the holidays.
