In this update:
We have a significant weekend closure affecting several roads in the Montlake neighborhood.
First, a rundown of what is closed:
- Montlake Boulevard between East Hamlin Street and East Louisa Street.
- East Roanoke Street between East Louisa Street and Montlake Boulevard.
- Lake Washington Boulevard between Montlake Boulevard and East Foster Island Road.
- All SR 520 on- and off-ramps to and from Montlake Boulevard, including the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Lake Washington Boulevard.
- Bill Dawson Trail between East Calhoun Street and Montlake Boulevard (see details in next section).
Closures begin at 10 p.m. tomorrow, May 31, and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, June 3. During the closures, crews will install permanent roadway and utilities. A signed detour for pedestrians and bicycles will be provided through the area.
Crews will also close the Bill Dawson Trail between East Calhoun Street and Montlake Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday, May 31, to 6 a.m. Monday, June 3. This closure is needed so crews can remove temporary electrical poles and begin grading the area for landscaping.
Crews will close the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard overnight from 10 p.m. tonight, Thursday, May 30, until 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. Nearby neighbors may experience loud nighttime work during this time as crews perform saw-cutting activities.
In preparation for the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project, crews are drilling three test holes – also referred to as “geotechnical test borings” – on Delmar Drive East to collect soil samples (see map of drilling locations below). Work began on Tuesday and will continue through Friday, June 7. This drilling work is part of ongoing soil sampling that will continue through summer.
This type of site investigation involves evaluating the soil and groundwater conditions within a given depth and location. These soil samples will further inform the project design and help determine the types of tools and construction methods that may be needed.
During drilling work on Delmar Drive East, nearby neighbors can expect:
- Single lane closures on Delmar Drive East between 11th Avenue East and East Interlaken Boulevard from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Bike lane closures through the work area.
- Flaggers on site directing traffic.
- Increased noise around the work areas from the drill and other equipment used to bore the holes and collect the soil samples.
We’re holding our next Montlake Project monthly meeting virtually at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26. Join us to learn about current and upcoming construction activities, including planned street and highway closures. Register below to attend and participate in a Q&A.
