Montlake Boulevard, East Roanoke Street, Lake Washington Boulevard, and associated SR 520 ramps closed next weekend; Delmar Drive lane closures next week

There is a horizontal green band that reads Rest of the West News. Above it is the letters W S D O T. An oval on the right reads state route 520.

In this update:

Next weekend: Montlake Boulevard, East Roanoke Street, Lake Washington Boulevard and associated SR 520 ramps closed

We have a significant closure scheduled next weekend affecting several roads in the Montlake neighborhood.

First, a rundown of what is planned to close:

  • Montlake Boulevard between East Hamlin Street and East Louisa Street.
  • East Roanoke Street between East Louisa Street and Montlake Boulevard.
  • Lake Washington Boulevard between Montlake Boulevard and East Foster Island Road.
  • All SR 520 on- and off-ramps to and from Montlake Boulevard, including the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Lake Washington Boulevard.

Closures begin at 10 p.m. Friday, May 31, and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, June 3. During the closures, crews will install permanent roadway and utilities. A signed detour for pedestrians and bicycles will be provided through the area.

Westbound SR 520 off-ramp to northbound I-5 closed nightly May 28-30

Heads up! After the holiday weekend, crews plan to close the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to northbound I-5 nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, Wednesday, May 29, and Thursday, May 30. The ramp will reopen at 5 a.m. each morning.

Drivers needing to access northbound I-5 should use the East Roanoke Street exit, continue straight past the light, and rejoin I-5 at the East Hamlin Street on-ramp – or consider alternate routes.

These closures are part of the SR 520/I-5 Express Lanes Connection Project. During the closure, crews will work on nearby retaining walls and move materials between work zones so the project can progress towards its fall 2024 completion.

Beginning next week: Single lane closures on Delmar Drive East for geotechnical soil sampling

In preparation for the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project, crews will drill three test holes – also referred to as “geotechnical test borings” – on Delmar Drive East to collect soil samples (see map of drilling locations below). Work will begin Tuesday, May 28, and continue through Friday, June 7. This drilling work is part of ongoing soil sampling that will continue through summer.

This type of site investigation involves evaluating the soil and groundwater conditions within a given depth and location. These soil samples will further inform the project design and help determine the types of tools and construction methods that may be needed.

During drilling work on Delmar Drive East, nearby neighbors can expect:

  • Single lane closures on Delmar Drive East between 11th Avenue East and East Interlaken Boulevard from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Bike lane closures through the work area.
  • Flaggers on site directing traffic.
  • Increased noise around the work areas from the drill and other equipment used to bore the holes and collect the soil samples.
