Southbound Interstate 5 in Bellingham will be reduced to single lane between the Lakeway Drive and Samish Way exits from 8:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19, to 11 a.m. Monday, May 20.
Are you traveling southbound on Interstate 5 in Bellingham this weekend? You should expect to see the right lane closed between Lakeway Drive (milepost 253) and Samish Way (milepost 252). Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19, until 11 a.m. Monday, May 20, our crews will remove and replace a broken concrete panel. The I-5 off-ramp to Samish Way also will close, and a signed detour will be in place.
The lane reduction allows crews to safely perform necessary repair work on I-5. Please plan for additional travel time, slow down and pay attention in our work zones, and be kind to our crews!
Expect increased congestion on major routes, such as I-5, US 2 and I-90
Memorial Day weekend is often the unofficial start of summer and planning ahead now is a great jumpstart to holiday travels. To help travel planning, we released travel charts for the holiday weekend. The charts include the best (and worst) times to travel on major routes, such as I-5 between Olympia and Tacoma, US 2, I-90 and the I-5/U.S.-Canadian border.
Holiday weekends often mean increased traffic and congestion on roadways. Travelers are strongly encouraged to be patient, expect delays and stay alert. All Washington state ferry routes also are expected to be busy.
We often have special events and roadwork taking place in the Northend, including construction projects, maintenance and repairs. We always try to minimize any effects to travel, but sometimes it is necessary to close a lane to do the work or create a safe work zone for our crews.
While we aren't doing a lot of roadwork this week, our crews will still be out monitoring and keeping the roads safe. If you spot them, slow down and give them space to work! A huge thanks to our crews for all their hard work through the holidays.
