In this update:
This Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Montlake Bridge will close to all traffic for Opening Day of Boating Season. In addition, the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard, and the left turn access from the eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard, will be closed.
These closures are not related to construction for the SR 520 Montlake Project. Below are some commonly asked questions:
Q: Will I be able to go northbound on Montlake Boulevard?
A: No. During the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. window, the Montlake Bridge will be in the open (raised) position to allow for boats to travel freely through the Montlake Cut. Any traffic north of the Montlake Bridge will be detoured away from the bridge. Traffic exiting from SR 520 wanting to access northbound Montlake Boulevard or exiting at Lake Washington Boulevard will also be detoured away from the bridge.
Q: Why does the bridge have to be in the raised (open) position?
A: Boat traffic has the right-of-way over vehicle traffic when bridges block the path of marine traffic. This is a federal law and not something WSDOT determines.
Because of this law and the high number of boats expected to travel through the Montlake Cut, keeping the bridge raised allows for the event to continue with minimal disruption. It’s also safer for drivers, pedestrians and boat users.
Q: Where can we learn more about the event?
A: Follow WSDOT Traffic on social media for updates related to Opening Day of Boating Season and closures of the Montlake Bridge.
We’re writing to share positive news about the Montlake signage process. We appreciate your patience while we worked to clarify next steps.
2024 Legislative Session outcome
As we’ve mentioned before, our ability to implement the workgroup’s recommendations depended on additional funding provided by the Legislature. The final supplemental transportation budget directed us to move forward with awarding the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project and “seek consequential cost reduction opportunities through value engineering and prioritizing functionality and usability of the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid.” The budget did not include funding to install the alternative sign structures on Montlake Boulevard. Following the legislative session, legislators continued discussions on this issue and identified a path forward to implement the Montlake signage workgroup’s recommendations.
Next steps
We will now work to finalize the alternative signage, contract the work, and begin procuring materials. As we shared before, the process to procure the materials and install the new sign structures may take at least a year. Again, we appreciate your feedback and engagement on this issue.
We’re holding our next Montlake Project monthly meeting virtually at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15. Join us to learn about current and upcoming construction activities, including planned street and highway closures. Register below to attend and participate in a Q&A.
