SR 520 closed across Lake Washington this weekend, Feb. 23-26

There is a horizontal green band that reads Rest of the West News. Above it is the letters W S D O T. An oval on the right reads state route 520.

In this update:

This weekend (Feb. 23-26): SR 520 closed across Lake Washington; SR 520 Trail open

SR 520 will fully close in both directions between I-5 in Seattle and 92nd Avenue Northeast in Clyde Hill from 10 p.m. tonight to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26. During the closure, crews will pave sections of the roadway and test the lighting and fire suppression system within the Montlake lid.

All associated SR 520 on- and off-ramps between I-5 in Seattle and 92nd Avenue Northeast on the eastside will also close.

The SR 520 Trail across Lake Washington will remain open. However, users should expect a narrower section of the trail near the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard. Crews will be working in that area and trail users are advised to proceed through the area with caution.

East Roanoke Street near Montlake Boulevard also closed this weekend, Feb. 23 – 26

In addition to the closure of the SR 520 highway, East Roanoke Street will close in both directions between Montlake Boulevard and East Louisa Street from 10 p.m. tonight to 6 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26.

During this closure, crews will install utilities and pave sections of the roadway. There will be a signed pedestrian and bike detour through this work zone.

Beginning the week of March 4: Daytime drilling in Portage Bay for geotechnical soil sampling

In preparation for the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project, crews will drill 10 test holes in Portage Bay – also referred to as “geotechnical test borings” – to collect soil samples around the project area (see map of drilling locations below). The soil samples will be collected from small barges.

This type of site investigation involves evaluating the soil, rock and groundwater conditions within a given depth and location and helps engineers determine the physical properties surrounding a construction site.

Work will begin the week of March 4 and continue through early April. Nearby neighbors can expect increased noise around the work areas from the drill and other equipment used to bore the holes and collect the soil samples.

Regardless of the outcome of this year’s legislative session and when project construction begins, these new samples will further inform the project design and help determine the types of tools and construction methods that may be needed.

Note: Additional on-land drilling locations may be added on both the east and west sides of Portage Bay. We will notify adjacent neighbors in advance of this work.
