In this update:
The SR 520 Trail is closing for fifteen days around-the-clock beginning at 10 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 19. It will reopen at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2.
The trail will close between the Evergreen Point lid in Medina and the Montlake neighborhood in Seattle. Trail users will need to use alternate routes or take transit to get across Lake Washington.
Due to the complexity of the planned work (more information below), there is no way to safely accommodate cyclists and pedestrians across the lake. We’re working with the contractor to find ways to expedite the work and compress the closure as much as possible.
There are several transit routes to help you get across SR 520. Please use the King County Metro Trip Planner for the most up-to-date information about transit routes and reference this interactive map for transit routes across SR 520.
Crews will complete a wide range of work on and around the trail during this 15-day closure, including:
- Final path construction, which requires demolition of the existing path and railing.
- Construction of new concrete barriers, concrete path surface, and railing.
- Electrical crossings and installation, which require trenching across the path's entire width.
- Construction of new concrete path connections and sidewalks.
- Landscaping along the path, which requires equipment to operate on the path.
- Drainage structure completion within the pavement surfaces along the path.
In short: This closure is needed so crews can rebuild the section over the utility vaults, create new barriers and railing, and align the trail into its new and final alignment.
