Crews are installing the roofing on the new pedestrian walkway at Bainbridge Island and adding windows that will feature markings to help prevent birds from flying into them.

Walk-on and ADA passengers will board ferry via the car deck Dec. 19 and 20

From 9 a.m. Dec. 19 to around 6 p.m. Dec. 20, all walk-on and ADA passengers will board and exit the ferry via the car deck at our Bainbridge Island ferry terminal. Crews will be replacing the mechanical components of the moveable part of the walkway that meets up with the ferry. The pedestrian path to the ferry will be clearly marked, but please be aware that it is not covered.

There will be a second two-day closure of the overhead walkway in January so crews can finish replacing the hoist system on that same portion of the walkway.

Work to replace the more than 50-year-old walkway began in July 2022. The project reached a major milestone in September when crews set the four massive metal walkway spans into place on their footings. (Here's a time-lapse video of that work.) The new, wider overhead walkway will feature seating and infrared heaters for passenger comfort while awaiting the ferry. It is set to open early next year.

Here's a side view of the new overhead walkway as crews install roofing. Next up are the windows, through which passengers will have some pretty stunning water views.
