In this update:
On Monday we opened all lanes of SR 520’s new eastbound “twin” bridge between Montlake and the floating bridge on Lake Washington.
In December 2017, we opened what was then a new, westbound-only bridge (pictured at right in photo below) across Union Bay. Then, starting in February 2019, eastbound drivers began sharing that bridge in a two-way configuration. We did that so we could remove the old, structurally vulnerable SR 520 bridge between the floating bridge and Montlake, and then build a stronger, seismically resilient bridge over Union Bay for eastbound traffic.
Aerial view looking northwest at parallel “twin” bridges on SR 520 approaching Seattle's Montlake neighborhood. The eastbound bridge is pictured on the left.
To celebrate the new twin bridge, we recruited a friend (or two) to help us make a TikTok video about it!
The new three-lane span, with a dedicated transit/HOV lane, is the latest milestone for the SR 520 Montlake Project as we get closer to project completion.
Be sure to also check our real-time construction cameras to see the progress.

Crews will close both directions of SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard in Seattle and 92nd Avenue Northeast in Clyde Hill overnight beginning at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5 until 5 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6. The SR 520 Trail will also be closed.
After the Labor Day holiday, drivers heading to Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhoods will need to prepare for four weekend closures of the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Mercer Street.
All the closures, listed below, will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and continue until 4 a.m. Monday. Some of the closures will be weather dependent and we’ll let you know each week the status of the next upcoming closure.
- Sept. 8-11
- Sept. 15-18
- Sept. 22-25
- Sept. 29 – Oct. 2
Crews will spend the weekends paving and working on new retaining walls. During the Aug. 25-28 closure, crews were able to make great progress paving the Mercer Street on-ramp to northbound I-5.
A reminder that with these weekend closures, the I-5 Express Lanes exit to Mercer Street also will close. Drivers who want to access South Lake Union or nearby areas should either stay on southbound I-5 and exit at Stewart Street or consider alternate routes.
We’re holding our next Montlake Project monthly meeting virtually at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13. Join us to learn about current and upcoming construction activities, including planned street and highway closures. Register below to attend and participate in a Q&A.
