Lake Washington Boulevard reopening today; upcoming closures to kick off a busy August

There is a horizontal green band that reads Rest of the West News. Above it is the letters W S D O T. An oval on the right reads state route 520.

In this update:

Busy August starts with overnight ramp closures next week

The westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard will be closed nightly for four nights in a row starting Monday, Aug. 7, so crews can install drainage.

Next Monday through Thursday, crews will close the ramp each night at 10 p.m. and then reopen it at 6 the following mornings. Note that the ramp to Lake Washington Boulevard will remain open so drivers can still exit to the Montlake neighborhood.

Plan ahead: SR 520 closing across Lake Washington Aug. 11-14 weekend

Graphic shows a map of SR 520 closed across Lake Wash, with closure points in red and trail in dotted green for open.

Crews will close SR 520 for the entire weekend starting at 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14 to build the connection to the new eastbound bridge we're building over Union Bay.

Here are the closure’s limits:

  • Eastbound closed: Montlake Boulevard to 92nd Avenue Northeast
  • Westbound closed: 92nd Avenue Northeast to I-5

The SR 520 Trail remains open during this closure.

Fred Hutch Obliteride on Saturday, Aug. 12

Look for a bunch of extra bikes around the UW campus early Saturday morning when Obliteride kicks off its annual bike rides to help cure cancer faster by raising funds for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. There are 25-, 50- and 100-mile rides that all start at 6:30 a.m. at the UW’s E-18 parking lot. All rides travel across the SR 520 Trail.

Good news! Lake Washington Boulevard reopening two days early

We’ve worked with our Montlake Project contractor, Graham, to reopen Lake Washington Boulevard between 24th Avenue East and Montlake Boulevard and the associated westbound SR 520 off-ramp two days earlier than scheduled. The street and off-ramp are now scheduled to open at noon today, Aug. 4.

This closure started July 23 and includes utility and drainage work, paving, and realigning Lake Washington Boulevard. The early opening also allows for better traveler access during Seafair weekend.

Update about SR 520/I-5 reversible HOV/transit ramp opening

WSDOT’s SR 520/I-5 Express Lanes Connection Project (I-5 Connection Project) is building a reversible transit/HOV ramp between SR 520 and I-5. The project is one part of a coordinated, regional effort between Sound Transit, King County Metro, the Seattle Department of Transportation and WSDOT to improve multimodal connections and transit service between Seattle and the Eastside

In 2021, WSDOT and its partner agencies decided to speed up the I-5 Connection Project’s construction due to the rising need for transit from the Eastside. The four agencies signed a letter of understanding (LOU) to open the ramp in 2023. WSDOT planned to open it for a year and then close it once construction began on the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project.

Since signing the LOU, however, the agencies have all faced project delays of their own. The delays stem from a four-month concrete-delivery strike, supply chain disruptions, high inflation, rising project costs, and other factors. As a result, we can no longer open the reversible ramp as planned. We now plan to open it at the end of the Portage Bay Bridge Project’s construction, currently scheduled for 2030. The revised ramp schedule will streamline Portage Bay Bridge project delivery, provide more space and access for the Portage Bay contractor, and potentially accelerate Portage Bay project construction – which would allow the reversible ramp to open sooner than 2030.

Though we’re postponing the new SR 520/I-5 ramp’s opening, the public will still benefit from mobility improvements we’ll complete next spring at the Mercer Street on- and off-ramp to and from I-5.  We are modifying an existing ramp there for HOV and potential transit use between the I-5 express lanes and Mercer Street.
