Montlake Boulevard and ramps closed this weekend; Roanoke off-ramp reopening Saturday

Travelers beware: Montlake Boulevard and ramps are closed this weekend – and next week doesn’t get much better

Progress on the SR 520 Montlake Project continues during this busy construction season. Crews are preparing Montlake Boulevard for its final alignment and will close the street for several days.

The best thing you can do? Avoid the area if possible and plan ahead.

Here are the closure details:

Weekend of June 16-19: Montlake Boulevard will be closed in both directions between East Roanoke Street and East Hamlin Street from 10 p.m. Friday, June 16 until 5 a.m. Monday, June 19. Crews will also close the SR 520 on- and off-ramps to the Montlake neighborhood. This closure will look the same as the closure we had during the June 2-5 weekend.

The June 16-19 closure will have the same setup as the June 2-5 closure. Montlake Boulevard will be closed in both directions. We recommend avoiding the area unless you're there for local access needs.

Week of June 19-24: Crews will reduce Montlake Boulevard between East Hamlin Street and East Roanoke Street to one lane in both directions from 5 a.m. Monday, June 19 until 10 p.m. Saturday, June 24.

Map shows Montlake single lane closure in red

During the June 19-24 closure, Montlake Boulevard will be reduced to one lane open for each direction of traffic. Drivers will want to plan ahead for delays.

Bottom line: These closures will allow crews to install utilities and permanent pavement. When completed, the street will cross SR 520 in a straighter, north-south line, much like its preconstruction alignment. We know these extended closures have been a heavy ask of the Montlake neighborhood and commuters. We appreciate everyone’s understanding as we get closer to project completion in 2024.

I-5 Project: Westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Roanoke St. reopens Saturday, June 17

We’re just about ready to reopen the westbound SR 520 off-ramp to East Roanoke Street at 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 17.

The ramp closed around-the-clock on May 30 to allow crews to finish the new retaining wall and prepare the ramp to be shifted north to make space for the new flyover ramp.

When the ramp reopens, it will be closer to the retaining wall than it was before the closure. The work is not done though. There will be one additional around-the-clock closure of this ramp in the coming weeks. Once that date is finalized, we’ll share that information with you here.

There is a lot of summer construction this year – here’s how to prepare

Construction is picking up as we work to provide Washington travelers safer and more accessible transportation systems and to improve environmental habitats. From paving to bridge repairs to creating better routes for fish in area waterways, you’ll see lots of crews working this summer on and near state highways. And that means road closures, traffic delays or congestion.

Many of these projects will overlap in locations and timing. In most cases, there is no way to avoid weekends, holidays and large events. While WSDOT works to make these road improvements, it’s more important than ever for you to stay informed and “know before you go,” whether traveling across town or statewide. Tools, tips and an explanation of the extent of the work is available in two recent WSDOT blog posts: Here comes the sun – and a LOT of summer construction and Why there will probably be roadwork during the event you’re going to this summer.
