In this update:
You may have noticed yesterday a new barge floating just offshore in Portage Bay. From this barge, we began installing the second, and final, test pile for the upcoming Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project. Crews made progress yesterday installing the pile into the lakebed using a vibratory hammer, and will continue their work today using both a vibratory hammer and an impact hammer. Nearby neighbors can expect to hear noise and feel some vibration. Crews are expected to complete this work by the end of the day.
The test pile work, both on land and in the water, provides us with valuable noise and vibration data. This data will allow the Portage Bay project team to plan for anticipated vibration levels, set vibration limits for the project contract and develop strategies to reduce vibration effects in surrounding neighborhoods when construction begins.
A crane is positioned on a barge as crews prepare to install a temporary test pile in Portage Bay.
Good news! The westbound SR 520 off-ramp to East Roanoke Street opened Sept. 1 after being closed for 55 days. Thank you for your patience as crews worked around the clock to realign the ramp. We moved the ramp to make room for a new, reversible bus and carpool ramp that will connect SR 520 to the I-5 express lanes.
Looking west, this photo shows the new, realigned off-ramp from westbound SR 520 to East Roanoke Street.
These columns will help support a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over SR 520 near the shore of Lake Washington in Seattle’s Montlake neighborhood.
Register for our September online construction meeting to learn about construction of the bicycle and pedestrian bridge we’re building over SR 520 to the east of the future Montlake lid. You’ll hear about upcoming highway closures as well. Register below to attend and participate in a Q&A.
