SR 520 will close in both directions between I-5 and the Eastside from 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29. This weekend closure is needed so crews can install large girders on the Montlake lid and realign the highway. The SR 520 Trail across Lake Washington will remain open so you can get outside for a summertime bike or stroll.
SR 520 will close between I-5 and the eastside.
In late August and early September, crews will work on the western shore of Portage Bay to install two temporary test piles — one on land (scheduled Aug. 26-28) and one in the water (scheduled Sept. 1-2). Pile installation involves driving a long metal tube, or pile, into the ground or lakebed to provide the foundation for a structure. The pile on land will be installed from the Portage Bay Bridge during the Aug. 26-29 weekend closure of SR 520. The in-water pile will be installed from a barge on Portage Bay.
Each temporary test pile is expected to take one to two days to complete. The work includes both installation and removal of the piles. Vibration monitoring during the pile installation and removals will provide information for the upcoming Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project. During installation, the project team will measure vibration levels to help determine vibration limit requirements on the project.
Additional details, including work hours and what to expect, can be found in our recent mailer to nearby properties.
Thank you to everyone who participated in our virtual public meeting on Aug. 4 to learn more about the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project’s draft Neighborhood Traffic Management Plan. In case you missed it, the plan is a collaborative effort between WSDOT and the city of Seattle that identifies planned and potential traffic management measures on local streets related to construction of this project.
As shared during the meeting, the draft plan is now available online and open for public comment. You can provide your feedback in three ways:
Your input is an important piece of this process and will help inform the final NTMP report published later this year.
