WAIIS Access for Maternal RSV Vaccine Records
To protect young babies from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pregnant people are recommended to get a one-time single dose of maternal RSV vaccine during weeks 32 through 36 of pregnancy. Pfizer’s RSV vaccine, Abrysvo, is currently the only approved vaccine for use during pregnancy to prevent severe RSV disease in infants.
A single dose of RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab or clesrovimab) should be administered to all infants <8 months of age born during or entering their first RSV season from October through March. Nirsevimab only is recommended for babies 8-19 months at high risk entering their second RSV season. For most babies whose mothers received Abrysvo at least 14 days before the baby is born, RSV immunization is not indicated.
A provider may need to review vaccine records of the birth parent to verify if and when Abrysvo was administered during pregnancy. The WAIIS can be utilized by authorized participating providers to look up this maternal data for the purpose of making direct health care decisions for their infant patient.

ISA Renewals
The DOH provider enrollment team is working to renew the Information Sharing Agreements (ISAs) for organizations participating in the WAIIS. Please check your records to ensure your ISAs are up to date as these agreements expire every 3 years. You may lose connectivity to the IIS if no response is received during our review and cleanup of IIS data.
If you are not up to date, click here to renew your agreement or contact pchoiisa@doh.wa.gov for any additional questions.

Test Patient Data
Test patient data should not be entered in the WAIIS production environment. Test patients are fictional records created to test a variety of system functions. Any test patient data should be removed from the registry. If you need assistance deleting test data, please contact us at IIS.Training@doh.wa.gov.
Update to WAIIS Query Response with Vaccine Forecast
There are two types of vaccine query messages sent via an interface between an EMR/EHR system and the WAIIS:
- The Request a Complete Immunization History query is a “Z34” request. The response message for a Z34 includes patient demographic information, a list of immunizations received, and a list of patient conditions that may impact immunization.
- The Request Evaluated Immunization History and Forecast query is a “Z44” request. The response message for a Z44 includes limited patient demographic information, the history of immunizations administered with validation, and the forecast of immunizations the patient is due to receive.
Initially, when bidirectional interfaces began connecting to the WAIIS, not all systems supported the use of both message types. To ensure we were sending back all necessary information we used a workaround within the IIS to default all response messages to always send back a forecast with the patient history.
The National CDC Guides and our current local HL7 Implementation Guide separate the use of the Z34 History and the Z44 History with Forecast queries. To better align with these standards, we will no longer support sending back a vaccine history with forecast as a default response. To ensure you’re receiving the correct response for your query messages, please ensure your system is sending the appropriate query type. Below are samples of each message type showing the appropriate message Identifier in the MSH-21 field.

Please consult with your EMR/EHR vendor or IT support team to confirm your system can support both query types. Please contact the IIS Data Exchange team at iisdataexchange@doh.wa.gov with any questions.
