Hot Weather Alert - Vaccine Temperature Management Tips

With high temperatures in the forecast this week, it's crucial to take precautions to prevent vaccine temperature excursions. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

1. Timely Storage - Be alert to your vaccine shipping confirmation. As soon as you receive your vaccine orders, promptly store them in the appropriate storage unit—either in the freezer or refrigerator.

2. Temperature Monitoring:

  • Storage Units - Closely monitor the temperatures in your storage units. High temperatures can threaten the viability of the vaccines, so vigilance is key.
  • Room temperatures where vaccine storage units are located - When room temperatures are high, vaccine storage units have to work harder to maintain internal temperatures. Refrigeration units are designed to operate efficiently within specific room temperature ranges (often 10°C–32°C or 50°F–90°F). If room temperatures exceed this, cooling efficiency drops, increasing the risk of a temperature excursion.

3. Response to Excursions - If a temperature excursion does occur, refer to your facility's Vaccine Management Plan and the Vaccine Temperature Excursion Guide (PDF).

4. Handling Out-of-Range Temperatures - If the vaccines must be moved due to out-of-range temperatures, you do not need prior approval. However, it is essential to monitor temperatures during transportation and continue monitoring while the vaccines are in the temporary storage unit.
