Update on 2025-2026 Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccine Availability

On Friday, the CDC notified state and local health department vaccination grantees that the FDA is considering discontinuing the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6 months–4 years. In brief:

  • Pfizer’s pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for 6m–4y may not be renewed by the FDA for the 2025–2026 season.
  • For children aged 5y–11y, Pfizer anticipates full licensure for this vaccine presentation, pending regulatory action.
  • Moderna’s Spikevax® recently received full licensure for children with certain health conditions. Pending FDA approval of its 2025–2026 formulation, Moderna plans to increase supply for children 11y and younger to help address potential gaps.
  • Novavax’s pediatric COVID-19 vaccine remains available for children aged 12+ with certain health conditions.

With COVID-19 cases rising in many parts of the U.S., we understand the need for clear guidance on vaccine availability this fall and the concern about potential supply gaps, particularly if providers have not ordered from manufacturers for several months.

CDC is in active discussions with Moderna, which is finalizing internal planning to determine specific supply volumes and timelines. They are confident they will be able to help mitigate any potential shortage.

We will share further updates on pediatric COVID-19 vaccine availability for the 2025–2026 season as soon as new information is confirmed.

Shipping Delays

We have been notified that there are some vaccine orders experiencing shipping delays during transit. The affected orders were sent from the distributor on Thursday, August 7th and Monday, August 11th and have been rerouted back to the distributor where viability will be determined. If deemed viable, they will be processed for reshipment. If the vaccines are no longer viable, a replacement order will be processed. This can take up to 5 business days, plus shipping time.

Please remember not to reject the order from the Inbound Order List - you will need it to receive the shipment when it arrives. You do not need to place a new order - your original order will either be reshipped or a replacement will be sent.

We apologize for the inconvenience. If you have additional questions regarding your order, please don't hesitate to contact us at WAChildhoodVaccines@doh.wa.gov.

Reminder: Help Prevent Vaccine Waste - Fall Inventory Guidance

As we prepare for the fall respiratory season, the Department of Health, WVA, and WCAAP are asking Childhood Vaccine Program providers and partners to help reduce waste of high-cost vaccines like COVID-19 and Nirsevimab. Over 11,000 vials of COVID-19 vaccine remain in the field and are at risk of being wasted, and thousands of Nirsevimab doses are set to expire this fall. While there is no shortage of COVID-19 or RSV vaccine, we need your help to be good stewards of these valuable resources, so we can continue to maintain a system that supports equitable access and operational efficiency for providers across our state.

Providers are encouraged to check inventory, post excess doses on the IIS Vaccine Advertisement page, and order smaller amounts more frequently.

For help with transfers, please refer to the Vaccine Transfer Checklist and FAQs; information on vaccine ordering, returns and choice can be found here. You can also reach out to us at WAChildhoodVaccines@doh.wa.gov.

Updated COVID-19 Vaccine Insurance Coverage Information

The Washington State Department of Health has shared updated information on COVID-19 vaccine insurance coverage. This includes key details on coverage and billing through Apple Health (Medicaid) and private insurers. Health care providers are encouraged to review the summary and share it within their networks.

The Department continues to recommend that everyone 6 months and older, including pregnant people, receive the current COVID-19 vaccine to help protect against severe illness. This guidance is informed by the Washington State Vaccine Advisory Committee (VAC), which advises on strategies to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases.

DOH remains committed to ensuring equitable vaccine access and will continue providing timely updates. Additional resources, are available on the COVID-19 Vaccine Information for Health Care Providers webpage.

This is general COVID billing guidance for all healthcare providers. For detailed Childhood Vaccine Program billing requirements, please review the CVP billing guide.
