Measles
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that has been reported in 19 states to date. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles cases and outbreaks. The MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine is recommended for children and adults, with two doses providing about 97% effectiveness.
Click here for more detailed information on the symptoms and prevention, vaccine requirements and current measles activity. The site contains multiple resources and materials, including the Immunization Response Guide: Measles.
How to Identify Patients Overdue for MMR is a quick reference guide that outlines detailed, step-by-step instructions to help identify patients in the IIS who are overdue for the MMR vaccine.

OPV, unspecified doses given before 4/1/16
We have discovered that doses of ‘OPV-unspecified’ given before 4/16/2016 are incorrectly showing in the WAIIS as invalid. This issue occurred with the implementation of the updated WAIIS forecasting tool on February 26, 2025. We are changing all ‘OPV-unspecified’ doses administered before 04/01/2016 to ‘trivalent OPV (tOPV)’. This modification will ensure these immunization records are evaluated correctly by the WAIIS forecaster.
Questions about this change can be directed to ImmuneNurses@doh.wa.gov.
You can also refer to Polio Vaccine Documentation in the WAIIS.

IZ Gateway Updates
Washington has been participating in the CDC’s Immunization Gateway Project (IZ Gateway) since 2022. This project aims to connect states with federal providers that span multiple jurisdictions and with other state Immunization Information Systems (IISs). As of February 2025, Washington is receiving near-real-time data from 11 state jurisdictions (AK, AZ, DC, IN, LA, MS, OH, PR, SD, WV, WY). We have also established connections with 3 federal partners: Electronic Disease Notification (EDN, CDC), the Veterans Health Administration, and the Department of Defense (not currently submitting data for active service members). The immunization data received because of this project improves the completeness of our IIS’s patient records. Connections with other states are expected to follow as the CDC approves the pairings.
Pairing with Oregon’s immunization registry is a high priority for Washington, and we acknowledge our IIS users’ frustration in regard to the delay. We have shared our desire to move forward with the Oregon connection as soon as possible with both CDC and our technology vendor, STCHealth, at every opportunity. While we anticipate work will begin soon, we are dependent on CDC’s confirmation that Oregon’s system is functionally ready to connect through the IZ Gateway. CDC will determine when to add the WA/OR pairing to the queue and schedule the project to begin based on resource availability. Washington will continue to strongly advocate for this priority pairing.

Perinatal Immunizations Survey
Do you provide health care to pregnant people in Washington state? Please share your thoughts on vaccination concerns, barriers, and benefits by taking a 10-minute survey. This survey is being conducted by Vax Northwest (a partnership of Kaiser Permanente Washington, WithinReach, Washington State Department of Health and several other organizations and individuals). The results will inform strategies and efforts related to improving care related to vaccines recommended during pregnancy in Washington state. If you have any technical issues completing this survey, send an email to the project team. The survey will be open until April 7, 2025.

ISA Renewals
The DOH provider enrollment team is working to renew the Information Sharing Agreements (ISAs) for organizations participating in the WAIIS. Please check your records to ensure your ISAs are up to date as these agreements expire every 3 years. You may lose connectivity to the IIS if no response is received during our review and cleanup of IIS data.
If you are not up to date, click here to renew your agreement or contact pchoiisa@doh.wa.gov for any additional questions.
