Vaccine Blurbs #244: Nirsevimab Administration Ending March 31st

Washington State Department of Health | February 12, 2025

Nirsevimab Administration Ending March 31st

While the onset and duration of RSV season may vary throughout the United States, nirsevimab is typically administered October through the end of March in most of the continental US.

With the season coming to an end soon, please use extra caution when placing orders and only order what can be used by March 31st. Check the advertisements page in the IIS to find doses available nearby before placing an order.

If your clinic has nirsevimab that isn't going to be used before the end of the season, consider sharing what you have with another nearby site that may need it.

Transfer Guidelines:

  • Complete a CVP Vaccine Transfer Request in the IIS at least 48 hours before each intended movement of vaccine - vaccine cannot be moved prior to Transfer Request approval from DOH.
  • Ensure that receiving facility (where vaccine is being transferred) is no more than a one (1) hour drive away
  • Providers must follow CVP vaccine transport guidelines to ensure the cold chain is always maintained during transport
  • Review the vaccine transfer checklist and FAQs for additional information and guidelines for transferring vaccines

Please don't hesitate to contact us at WAChildhoodVaccines@doh.wa.gov for any questions or for assistance managing your nirsevimab inventory.

Update on Shelf Life for Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine for Ages 12 and Up

We would like to inform you about a change in the shelf life of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for individuals aged 12 and older (NDC# 00069-2432-10) expected between mid-February and mid-March.

Typically, the shelf life for this direct ship vaccine upon delivery is over 12 weeks. However, during the specified period, Pfizer anticipates that the shelf life will be reduced to approximately 8 to 11 weeks. We recommend that you plan your orders accordingly to minimize vaccine waste.

Please note that this reduction in shelf life does not apply to other Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines

Updated Vaccine Management Plan Template

The Vaccine Management Plan template has been updated to reflect the new annual vaccine coordinator training requirements as well as integrating Adult Vaccine Program (AVP) content for providers that are dually enrolled in CVP and AVP.  This template should be used by providers who are dually-enrolled in CVP and AVP and those that are only enrolled in CVP or AVP. Providers who are only enrolled in one of the programs, simply need to complete the sections of the template that are relevant to the program in which they’re enrolled. As a reminder, providers are required to review and update their Vaccine Management Plan annually.

Billing Tip: Infant RSV (90380/90381) and High-Risk Population

When a provider identifies a high-risk infant and makes the decision to administer an additional dose of the RSV immunization append modifier SK to the immunization code.

Modifier SK identifies individuals who are at high risk of getting a disease.  High risk includes those with underlying medical conditions, weakened immune systems, and other special circumstances that increase the risk of illness.  Modifier SK is only used with immunization codes.  (Reference Appendix B: HCPCS Level II Modifiers, Lay Descriptions, and Tips)

Abrysvo vaccine no longer recommended during pregnancy in most of the United States. Continue protecting infants with nirsevimab (Beyfortus) through March

Even though respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV) may still be circulating in Washington state, CDC recommends no longer offering Abrysvo RSV vaccine during pregnancy after January 31 in most of the United States. Providers should no longer be offering Abrysvo to pregnant persons, but can continue to offer nirsevimab (Beyfortus, Sanofi) through March 31 to susceptible infants younger than 8 months of age in most of the United States. Children who are at high risk for severe RSV disease between 8 months through 19 months should also get nirsevimab (Beyfortus) during their second RSV season.
