Holiday Shipping Calendar

With the holidays quickly approaching, please be mindful of shipping delays, limited or no shipping days, and plan your vaccine orders accordingly.  December 10th is the last day you can submit a vaccine order to receive the delivery before January. Please note that there will be no vaccine deliveries made during the week of Christmas and New Year's. You can place an order off your typical schedule if needed. Please ensure your accountability reports are up to date prior to placing orders to ensure expedited processing. It's also a good idea to update your shipping hours in your provider agreement if needed. Check out the holiday shipping calendar on our website for more information

January 9th Training: New Vaccine Coordinator Training Requirements for 2025!

Join us on January 9th at noon for a training focused on the new Vaccine Coordinator Training that will replace the CDC's You Call the Shots (YCTS) in 2025. This training is comparable to the YCTS training content with the addition of Washington State Vaccine Program specifics. It will cover all the important information needed to participate in Washington’s Childhood and Adult Vaccine Programs.

Primary and back-up vaccine coordinators must complete this annual training requirement within the current calendar year, prior to their provider agreement renewal deadline. It is also best practice to have all staff who handle and administer vaccines complete the training as well.

We are working on getting continuing education credits for nurses, medical assistants, and pharmacists/pharmacy techs. Stay tuned for more details.

Register for the Training!

Beyfortus Stability and Storage

During the recent widespread power outages, we saw an increased loss of Beyfortus RSV doses. This is due to the short window of time this product can be out of range according to Sanofi’s Stability and Storage data (see table below).

Each dose of Beyfortus costs the Childhood Vaccine Program $395, so any loss at that price point is a concern. If you carry Beyfortus product and don’t already have remote alerts and/or alarm systems enabled for after-hours temperature events, we recommend upgrading to this feature.  If you have a vaccine loss over $10,000 you could be required to purchase or update equipment to include remote alerts to help reduce the risk of future incidents as outlined in our Vaccine Loss Policy.

As a reminder, you should always contact the manufacturers to determine vaccine/product viability after a temperature excursion as stability information may be updated or factors such as previous excursions could impact viability. You can refer to the Temperature Excursion Guide for more information.

Reminder: Changes are Now Live for Providers Directly Entering Patient Data Into the IIS

All  providers that directly enter immunization data in the IIS will get an automatic prompt to select an eligibility category for patients 19 years and older. Previously, this automatic prompt was only seen for patients under 19 years old. This change went live on December 2nd.

While adding administered vaccinations to a patient record in the IIS, you will be directed to the Eligibility Update screen. Select the appropriate eligibility status from the drop down box, then select continue, as seen in the image below.

VFC Eligibility Update

You can visit our CVP/AVP eligibility page here for more information on the categories. As a reminder, even though Adult Medicare is an option to select in the drop-down menu, publicly supplied AVP vaccine cannot be administered to individuals with Medicare.

In addition to the new AVP eligibility categories you will also notice a slight change to the names of the following Childhood Vaccine Program (CVP) eligibility categories.

Current IIS Eligibility Category Name Future IIS Eligibility Category Name

The 2025 immunization schedules are now available. Check out the Schedule Changes & Guidance as well as other helpful resources such as the Vaccine Catch-Up Guidance resources.

OPV Dose Correction

WA DOH (Department of Health) has discovered that doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) in the WA Immunization Information System (WAIIS) on or after 04/01/2016 may have been incorrectly entered as trivalent OPV (tOPV)). In April 2016, all OPV-using countries switched routine polio vaccination from tOPV to bivalent OPV (bOPV), which contains vaccine for only types 1 and 3 polioviruses. Monovalent OPV (mOPV) is also used during an outbreak response. As a result, the ACIP recommended schedule says doses of OPV administered on or after 04/01/2016 should not be counted. For the polio series to be evaluated correctly in the WAIIS, OPV doses given on or after 04/01/2016 should be documented as bOPV or OPV-unspecified so they are not counted as valid in the series completion. In mid-December of 2024, WA DOH will begin changing doses incorrectly documented in WAIIS as tOPV to OPV-unspecified to ensure that the doses are correctly evaluated by the WAIIS forecaster. This could result in new patients being forecasted as needing additional polio vaccine. Please vaccinate these patients with additional doses of IPV according to the Immunization Schedules | Vaccines & Immunizations | CDC. Additionally, please ensure that your facility is correctly documenting OPV doses on or after 04/01/2016 as bOPV or OPV-unspecified. Only OPV doses before this date should be documented as tOPV. Questions about this change can be directed to ImmuneNurses@doh.wa.gov.

Remaining Doses of PreHevbrio Recalled

VBI Vaccines, the manufacturer of its hep B vaccine, PreHevbrio, declared bankruptcy and is ending business operations. PreHevbrio is no longer being distributed. Customers with the product are asked to destroy or return remaining doses. The recall is not related to vaccine safety or quality. All properly administered doses of PreHevbrio are valid HepB vaccinations and do not need to be repeated.

If you have PreHevbrio or have questions about it, visit www.prehevbrio.com for additional information and guidance.

Adults with an incomplete PreHevbrio vaccination series can complete their series with Heplisav-B, Engerix-B, or Recombivax-HB. For a guide to completing a mixed-product vaccination series, see the table in Immunize.org’s Ask the Experts: Can You Show the Options of How to Complete Adult Hepatitis B Vaccination with Different Vaccine Products?

For questions about the immunization schedule, the Immunization Information System forecast, or any other immunization clinical questions, please send an email to ImmuneNurses@doh.wa.gov. Check out the Immunization Training web page for more resources and training opportunities.
