New Long COVID Definition and Updates
In June 2024, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) established a consensus definition for Long COVID based on findings in existing literature and engaging over 1,300 participants, with a focus on interdisciplinary dialogue and the patient perspective. The definition is:
"Long COVID is an infection-associated chronic condition (IACC) that occurs after SARS-CoV-2 infection and is present for at least 3 months. It can manifest as a continuous, relapsing and remitting, or progressive disease state that affects one or more organ systems."
The NASEM Long COVID full definition contains examples of symptoms and has five specific elements (slides 24-28) This consensus definition will create a shared understanding of what Long COVID is and will enhance the identification and treatment of Long COVID because all researchers working on it will measure the same thing.
