Training Enhances Telehealth: The Future of Patient Care

Telehealth is revolutionizing the delivery of occupational therapy, making services more accessible to a wider range of patients. This transformation is supported by regulations and training designed to ensure the effectiveness of telehealth. 

Since January 1, 2021, healthcare professionals offering telemedicine services in Washington State are required to complete specialized telemedicine training. 

For healthcare professionals interested in telemedicine training, the Telehealth Collaborative offers a free telemedicine training course through Canvas. 

You can enroll in the free telemedicine training by visiting the Telehealth Collaborative Training page on their website and clicking on 'Enroll in the free telemedicine training'. 

By following these guidelines, you can seamlessly integrate telehealth into your practice. This ensures that patients receive high-quality care, regardless of their location. 

Remember, the goal is to make healthcare accessible and inclusive for everyone in our state. 

New Law Enhances Support for Behavioral Health

Great news! On July 2023, a new law, Senate Bill 5228, enhanced Medicaid's support for behavioral health services, including occupational therapy. This significant change means that health care can be more integrated, and it highlights the essential role of occupational therapy in treating behavioral health issues. 

What does this mean for you? More patients can access the full range of care they need, and you, as occupational therapists, receive more recognition and support for the crucial work you do. 

We recommend all therapists take some time to familiarize themselves with Senate Bill 5228. It's important for you to understand how this could change your work and the care you provide to your clients. If you want to delve into this deeper, you can visit the complete text of Senate Bill 5228.

This law is a step forward in improving the support for behavioral health services. By understanding and implementing the changes brought by this law, we can work towards better healthcare outcomes for all.

Welcome Ryan Wilson!

We're thrilled to have Ryan join our team and look forward to the unique contributions he will bring. We invite you to meet him at our next board meeting and learn more about his work and experiences. 

Ryan is a dedicated school occupational therapist at the Muckleshoot Tribal School. As a proud member of the Muckleshoot Tribe, he brings a unique perspective to his role. 

He completed his master's degree in 2016 and his undergraduate degree in 2008, both from the University of Washington. Currently, he's pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership at the same university. 

Ryan is passionate about working collaboratively with patients and their families to achieve the best possible outcomes. 

In his free time, Ryan explores his creative side by crafting stained-glass windows. He also enjoys embarking on outdoor adventures with his loyal companion, a German Shepherd named Juniper. 

Keep Up with Your Practice: Continuing Competency Requirements

As occupational therapists and assistants, it's important for us to stay current. Our field is always evolving, and so should our skills. That's why we need to keep up with the latest continuing competency requirements. 

These requirements now include new areas like health equity. This means we're not just keeping up with our field, we're leading it. We're preparing ourselves to meet our clients' diverse needs. 

Understanding these rules can be a challenge. That's why we recommend referring to the official rules of continuing competency requirements. They provide a comprehensive understanding of the new and notable areas within the continuing education requirements.

These proposed changes aim to simplify obtaining and renewing licenses, focusing on reducing barriers to enter and remain in the occupational therapy workforce. These updates could significantly ease administrative burdens for practitioners.
