Mpox vaccine (JYNNEOS) commercialization and vaccine ordering changes
Washington State Department of Health sent this bulletin at 04/19/2024 10:21 AM PDT
As of April 1, Bavarian Nordic launched the private sector sale of JYNNEOS vaccine. As commercial availability of JYNNEOS increases, current federally procured vaccine available through the state will ramp down.
Ordering JYNNEOS vaccine through April 29
Providers can continue requesting JYNNEOS vaccine from the Department of Health through April 29.
- To order mpox vaccine, providers need a Health Partner Ordering Portal (HPOP) account. For assistance, please reach out to mcm@doh.wa.gov.
- Providers can request vaccine using this form: https://forms.office.com/g/1zngtyPUWw. Orders will be shipped directly to provider clinics. Local health jurisdictions do not need to request vaccines on their behalf. Please place orders in increments of 20 vials. Shipments can take 2-3 days to receive from date of order.
After April 30, the federal government will close this current process for obtaining federally purchased vaccine from the strategic national stockpile. Providers will need to procure JYNNEOS on the commercial market to offer to patients recommended to receive.
Access through vaccine programs and insurance coverage
Childhood Vaccine Program: Providers will be able to access JYNNEOS vaccine for persons 18 years of age from the state's Childhood Vaccine Program at no cost to the provider or patient. We await more information from our federal partners on the timeline.
ASPR/SNS: After April 30 through August, state health departments will have access to limited JYNNEOS vaccine through the Strategic National Stockpile where commercial vaccine is not available or accessible. DOH will continue to work with federal partners to understand availability of this supply and what the process will look like for providers to make requests. A provider must have an HPOP account to order directly from the SNS. Here is the form used to setup an HPOP account.
Other vaccine access options being explored: Additional options below are being explored as ways to increase equitable accessibility of the vaccine. We will provide updates if more options for JYNNEOS vaccine access become available.
- Patient assistance programs that may become available.
- Inclusion in the state Adult Vaccine Program for uninsured adults.
- Inclusion in PrEP DAP and EIP formularies.
Insurance coverage
- Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires insurers to cover ACIP-recommended vaccines without cost sharing by next coverage year.
- Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) guarantees coverage without cost sharing of ACIP-recommended vaccines for adults enrolled in Medicaid and Medicare Part D.
Actions for providers
- Submit any requests for HYNNEOS vaccine from the Department of Health before April 29.
- Continue to ensure timely vaccination with two doses of JYNNEOS vaccine for eligible individuals.
- Engage in patient outreach to address disparities in access and ensure access to HHS-supplied vaccine over the next month.
