COVID Commercialization is Just Around the Corner!

Soon, COVID-19 vaccine will transition from being purchased by the U.S. government to being available on the commercial market like many other vaccines. This means that COVID-19 vaccine will be available for ordering through the Childhood Vaccine Program (CVP). We don’t have an exact date for commercialization, but we want you to begin preparing for this change.

Here are a few key pieces of information:

  • For enrolled COVID-19 providers, all COVID-19 vaccine ordering will be turned off in the Washington Immunization Information System (WAIIS) at 4 PM PST on Wednesday, August 2nd. Please order sufficient vaccine to ensure you have adequate supply to last until commercialization, anticipated to happen in early fall. Updated vaccine recommendations for all age groups are expected in mid to late September and we expect that commercial ordering will open shortly afterwards.
  • All CVP providers will be required to have a supply of COVID-19 vaccines for the population they serve unless designated as a specialty provider by the program.
  • You don’t necessarily need to have an ultra-cold storage unit to store COVID-19 vaccine. There will be a variety of different vaccines to choose from and all can be stored in regular storage units.
  • Providers shouldn’t miss an opportunity to vaccinate patients for COVID-19 because of fear of vaccine wastage. The vaccine manufacturers are indicating they will offer smaller packaging sizes once vaccines are commercially available.

Keep an eye on the Vaccine Blurbs for information on upcoming provider trainings related to COVID-19 commercialization. As additional information becomes available, we will continue to keep you informed.

WVA Assessment Grid Effective July 1st

On April 13, 2023, the Washington Vaccine Association’s (WVA) Board of Directors approved the 2023-24 Vaccine Assessment Grid (“Grid”), which was finalized by the WVA’s Operations Committee on April 25, 2023. The 2023-24 Grid is in effect between July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024, and has been posted to the WVA’s website in both PDF and Excel format.

Assessment Grid 2023

The 2023-24 Grid lists vaccines and their corresponding CPT codes that are part of the dosage-based assessment (DBA) process for providers, health insurance carriers, and third-party administrators (TPAs). In effect, the Grid is the equivalent to a fee schedule. Providers are required to properly complete the DBA process as part of their participation in Washington’s CVP.  Properly remitted and paid DBAs ensure that adequate funds are available to support the State’s continued purchase of pediatric vaccines in Washington.

In addition to the 2023-24 Grid, please see links to two additional documents below:

  1. WVA’s Private Insurance Assessment Billing Provider Guide
  2. Washington State Department of Health’s Eligibility for Publicly Funded Vaccines: A Guide for Providers

The WVA has sent similar communications to health insurers and third-party administrators that remit DBAs to the WVA.

Should you have any questions, please contact us at info@wavaccine.org. We appreciate your practice’s support of the WVA.
