Healthy People 2030 defines two categories of health literacy:
“Personal Health Literacy is the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.
Organizational Health Literacy is the degree to which organizations equitably enable individuals to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.”
Health care professionals can promote health literacy by:
- Communicating and answering questions with simple non-medical language
- Communicating as though every patient is at risk for misunderstanding provided information
- Encouraging patients to participate in health care decisions
- Listening to understand and checking in with patients to confirm understanding
- Developing and testing educational materials with intended audience
Organizations can support health literacy by adopting the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) Ten Attributes of Health Literate Health Care Organizations.
