 What You Need to Know: COVID-19 & Immunocompromised People

Power of Provider Graphic

Hello POP Members,

In this edition of our Power of Provider email series, we’re highlighting COVID-19 vaccine protocol for immunocompromised people.

Protection is critical for people who are immunocompromised as they are more likely than others to contract and transmit COVID-19 and get severely ill from the virus.  As medical providers, public health educators, and support staff it is imperative to understand the additional vaccine recommendations this high-risk population is eligible for in order to be best protected.

Immunocompromised people may receive up to four doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The CDC recommends that some people age 5 and older who are moderately or severely immune compromised and who got an mRNA vaccine as their primary series receive an additional (third) primary dose 28 days after their second dose.  This is a total of three doses for the primary series. Five months after the primary series is completed, everyone at least age 12 should get a booster dose for added protection.

Immune compromised people who received Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine as their primary series should not receive an additional primary dose, but should receive a booster dose of any vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna preferred) two months after their primary dose of J&J.

We’ve created this reference chart you can share with your patients and clients to help them understand what additional doses they, or those in their care, may be eligible for.

Please encourage your immunocompromised patients or clients to stay up to date on all vaccine doses they are eligible to receive.

For more information about the COVID-19 vaccination or conditions that qualify an immunocompromised individual to be eligible, please visit the CDC website or the Washington State DOH website.

Thank you for your continued efforts!
