Our Public Health Laboratory (PHL) has begun receiving a significant number of SARS CoV-2 specimens in expired viral transport media (VTM). The PHL and other WA Medical Test Sites are unable to process specimens provided in expired viral transport media (VTM).
Please check your expiration dates for any media in stock, expiration dates on received samples, and expiration dates on media for which staff will be using to transport SARS CoV-2 patient samples to reference laboratories.
To note on affected media:
Type of Media: S2 Media (manufactured)
Lot #s involved: Multiple lots with varying expiration dates (from June 2021 to Sept 2, 2021)
Counties involved: Expired media from the following counties may be affected:
- Yakima
- King
- Kitsap
- Okanogan
- Pierce
- Pacific
- Spokane
- Grays Harbor
- Thurston
- Cowlitz
