Immunization Awards

The Immunization Action Coalition of Washington (IACW) Awards recognize people and groups who strive to improve immunization rates in their community. They honor those who are doing an exemplary job and go above and beyond to promote or foster childhood immunizations. This year the coalition recognizes The School Nurses at Seattle Public Schools with the 2020 IACW Collaborator Award, and Stewart Lyman with the 2020 IACW Advocate Award.

Imms Awards

The Seattle school nurses took great strides to cut their number of out-of-compliance students by over half! Their compliance rate is now 97 percent. And Stewart Lyman uses his personal passion and experiences to advocate for HPV vaccine and offer an HPV resource website.

Clinical Corner

Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) Requirement

Federal law requires healthcare organizations to provide the current Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) to the adult patient or child’s parent/legal representative before administering most vaccinations. The VIS does not replace the importance of education for the person or their parent/legal representative about why the vaccination is important, but is part of an important process to ensure vaccination safety. It’s also important to ensure the VIS being provided are up to date.

As the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices change recommendations or additional safety information is identified, the VIS is updated. Creating an organizational process to verify the current status and remove/replace old VIS documents is an important safety practice for your clinic.

More information about the requirements, current VIS versions, and documentation needed for the patient record can be found on the following:

  1. Center for Disease Control and Prevention: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/vis/
