In 2019, the State Board of Health approved changes to Chapter 246-105 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) concerning schools and child care immunization policy. These rules apply to all public and private schools and licensed child care centers in Washington State beginning August 1, 2020.
The update to WAC Chapter 246-105 has three major focuses:
- It requires medically verified immunization records for school and child care entry.
- It clarifies conditional status in regards to school and child care immunization requirements and implementation.
- It changes the Tdap immunization requirement to 7th through 12th grades.
Students attending school online because of school changes during the COVID-19 pandemic still need to be in compliance with all of the immunization requirements. More details including frequently asked questions about the rule change can be found on the Department of Health website.
Many questions have come in regarding flu vaccine availability for the upcoming flu season.
We are not able to give an exact date of flu vaccine availability, but it is not expected until late August or early September. The manufacturers ship the vaccine to McKesson, then McKesson notifies the CDC of the quantity received. The CDC then makes an allocation for each State. See diagram below.
Once Washington has enough allocated doses, we will send out notification and add the Vaccine Order Set in the IIS for all providers.
The Flu Vaccines At-A-Glance guide for the upcoming flu season can be found on the IIS Training Materials Portal or the Publicly Supplied Vaccines Webpage.
Continue to look for further information in the Vaccine Blurbs communication. If you do not receive the bi-weekly Vaccine Blurbs please contact us at WAChildhoodVaccines@doh.wa.gov.
August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This annual observance highlights the efforts of health care professionals to protect patients of all ages against vaccine-preventable diseases through on-time vaccination. It is important to protect children and adolescents, but remember, adults need vaccines too!
During NIAM, the Washington State Department of Health encourages you to ensure your patients are up to date on all recommended vaccines. Research has consistently shown that health care professionals are the most trusted source of vaccine information for parents and patients.
Use NIAM as an opportunity to access CDC educational resources like the #HowIRecommend Video Series, which offers simple and practical guidance for having successful vaccine conversations with parents and patients. These short videos demonstrate how to make effective vaccine recommendations, address common vaccine questions, and take a team-based approach to vaccination. Take a moment to share your support of vaccines online as well, using the tags #ivax2protect and #NIAM.
If you are struggling with how to give vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, please read our guide for providers and for pharmacists. It is more important than ever to keep people from catching preventable diseases.
