PCV13 Recommendations for Adults 65 Years and Older Updated

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices updated the PCV13 vaccine recommendations for adults 65 years and older. ACIP no longer recommends all adults 65 and older receive PCV13 routinely.

Shared clinical decision-making between the provider and patient is recommended for these adults who do not have an immunocompromising condition, cerebrospinal fluid leak, or cochlear implant and who have not previously received PCV13.

If a decision to administer PCV13 is made, PCV13 should be administered first, followed by PPSV23 at least 1 year later. One dose of PPSV23 is still recommended routinely for adults 65 years and older.
