Retraining plans impacted by the worker’s COVID-19 vaccination status

Attention all vocational firm owners/managers: Please share with your staff.

A worker’s COVID-19 vaccination status may impact their retraining goals and plans. Vocational rehabilitation counselors (VRCs) are encouraged to work with L&I claim managers and vocational service specialists to identify, document, and resolve retraining plan issues arising from a worker’s COVID-19 vaccination status.

Our goal is help workers successfully complete their retraining plans within existing laws, rules and policies. Schools and training facilities across the state have implemented new COVID-19 vaccination requirements. If a worker’s retraining plan is impacted by their vaccination status, VRCs can use this reference guide to determine the appropriate action.

As a reminder, VRCs should submit new retraining plans at least 45 days before the start date. The worker must have an approved plan at least 30 days prior to starting their training. All training program requirements need to be addressed, including COVID-19 vaccination requirements. Training plans submitted too close to the start date may cause a plan to fail or require extensions. Don’t wait until the last minute to submit. Help workers understand the timeline, think through potential barriers, and achieve their goals.

Contact your vocational services specialist if you have questions or concerns.

This memo will be posted to L&I’s “What’s New for Vocational Counselors” web page.
