Construction Safety Day is a life saver – this year’s event is planned for May 11 in Puyallup

TUMWATER – Construction is one of the most dangerous occupations in Washington. In 2017 the construction field saw more workplace fatalities and injuries than any other occupation in our state. Falls are always a leading cause of injury and death at construction sites, both here and nationwide.

Prevention and education are proven strategies that save lives. Each spring the state holds Construction Safety Day to provide training information on workplace safety. It takes place May 11 at the Washington State Fair Showplex in Puyallup. The event is an opportunity for workers, employers and supervisors in the construction industry to learn, interact and share ways to make workplaces safer.

This year’s keynote speaker is Eric Giguere, who nearly died when he was buried in an upstate New York worksite trench on the eve of his honeymoon in 2002. The incident changed his life forever. Eric will tell his story and talk about the importance of safety in a way that relates to working people. Like so many construction workers, Eric thought it could never happen to him, but without the proper precautions a trench collapse or a deadly fall can happen in an instant.

The day-long event runs from 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Speakers will cover topics including fall protection, trenching, biohazards, lock-out/tag-out procedures, an update on the state’s silica rules and much more.

There will be exhibitions from 3M, Blaklader LLC, Pape Material Handling, WA 811, National Safety, MSA Safety, RET Physical Therapy Group, the Department of Labor & Industries and many more.

It’s not too late to pre-register and get a discount. Pre-registration is $60 by May 10 or $70 at the door. There is a group rate (five or more) of $50, and currently-enrolled students are $25. A lunch is included in the fee.

The event is hosted by the Washington State Governor’s Industrial Safety & Health Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries.
