HOPE Crew Coffee Conversations: Historic Masonry
Tuesday, November 17 12:00-1:00 p.m.PST
Take a break from your daily grind, grab a hot beverage, and join the National Trust’s HOPE (Hands-On Preservation Experience) Crew for the first in a new series that hands the mic to preservation trades experts.
Our inaugural webinar focuses on historic masonry. Two masons will each share a recent project, walking through the details and challenges of the work, then come together for a conversation about the past and future of the trades.
This conversation is for everyone, not just specialists! No engineering or policy background is needed. Whether you’re a student, an emerging professional, a preservation enthusiast, or someone curious about a career in the trades, you’ll come away with a clearer picture of what trades work involves and why it matters.
Panelists
David Gibney, Self-Employed Expert Craftsman, will discuss his work on the Threatt Filling Station on Route 66, including what it means to repair historic masonry with care for the original materials and methods.
Brianna Castelli, Stone Carver and Mason at the Washington National Cathedral, will talk about her path into the trade and the work of caring for one of the country’s most iconic stone structures.
Following their presentations, David and Brianna will discuss how the craft has been passed down, how it has changed, and where it is headed.
