National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) is hosting a webinar:

Zoning Reform Isn’t Coming – It's Here: What Preservationists Need to Know

Thursday, October 22nd | 10 AM PST | 1.5 CE Credits AIA, HSW, AICP, Eq
States and local governments throughout the country are advancing zoning reforms to further community goals, foremost among them housing production. Yet too often, historic preservation is left out of these conversations or positioned as an obstacle rather than a partner. This session will confront that tension head-on by exploring how zoning reforms impact local historic preservation programs and how preservationists can meaningfully influence discussions about both zoning and broader community goals. Panelists will provide perspectives from a statewide preservation organization, a metropolitan regional planning agency, and a local government in three different states that are all revisiting how they approach zoning regulations.

Planning Basics

Friday, October 16 2026 | 9:00 am - 4:30 pm |University of Washington - Tacoma

This Bootcamp will be a day long, deep dive, into planning basics. The intent is to supplement key skills new planners need to feel confident in their new position and provide a refresher to those who have been on the job a while.

The audience is expected to be land use planners new to the profession, land use planners who need a refresher, planning students, any student in a related field (architecture, landscaping, environmental science, public policy, etc.), and others who are interested in planning topics (Planning Commission, Parks Committees, etc.).

Topics for the day include tactical de-escalation, matching message to the medium, basics of permit review, intermediate permit review, and tribal planning basics. Presenters are all working planners and planning related professionals.
