“When the tide is out, the table is set:” A program about the History and Culture of the Olympia Oyster
On Saturday, September 26th, come along on a fascinating journey into the history of the Olympia oyster and the people whose lives, livelihoods, and cultures were shaped by the waters of Puget Sound. Hear local experts share their knowledge and insights about the iconic and delectable Olympia oyster and the role it played in local history. The presentation is in fulfilment of mitigation requirements that resulted from the demolition of the Olympia Oyster Company Shelton Oyster Shucking Plant.
Featured Speakers
· Charlene Krise: Director of the Squaxin Island Museum, Library, and Research Center
· Russell Holter: Historian, researcher, and cultural resource management consultant.
· Llyn De Danaan: Anthropologist and writer, professor emerita, The Evergreen State College and author of the book Katie Gale: A Coast Salish Woman's Life on Oyster Bay.
When: Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 2:30 to 5:00 pm at the Harbor House meeting space on Percival Landing, located at 217 Thurston Ave NW. Following the program, an optional walking tour will be available featuring shellfish industry sites located on Percival Landing and the Downtown Olympia Historic District.
