Four lanes of eastbound 128th St. now approach the I-5 overpass.

Four lanes of eastbound 128th St. now approach the I-5 overpass.

All Eastbound Lanes of 128th St. Now Open Near I-5

The new bus-only lane is now open near the I-5 overpass heading eastbound on 128th Street SW.

Eastbound traffic previously had three lanes — two that moved onto the overpass and one that turned onto southbound I-5.

There are now four lanes for eastbound traffic approaching the overpass. The far-right lane is only for turning onto southbound I-5, and the second lane from the right is a bus-only lane.

Community Transit is finalizing the plan for how the bus-only lane will be used by its drivers. When the plan is in place, a special bus signal known as a queue jump will give the bus a green light several seconds before other vehicles to allow the bus to merge into the regular traffic lane from a red light.

Information about the 128th Street project is online at www.communitytransit.org/128th.

Double Lane Closures on Airport Road

This weekend, concrete bus pads will be at installed four station sites in the far-right lane of traffic. The concrete pads reinforce places in the road where the 60-foot Swift buses will stop for passengers.

This work requires double lane closures from 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12 to 4 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15 at the following intersections:

  • Northbound, Airport Rd. and 100th St SW
  • Southbound, Airport Rd. and 100th St SW
  • Southbound, Airport Rd. and 112th St SW
  • Southbound, Airport Rd. and Gibson Rd.

Stations throughout Area 1 (see page 2) will continue to experience periodic daytime (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and nighttime (8 p.m. to 4 a.m.) single-lane closures next week.

Information about the stations for Swift Green Line is online at www.communitytransit.org/swiftstations.

75th St. SW Receiving New Traffic Signal Poles

The landscape is continuing to change along 75th Street SW as construction crews install traffic signal lighting near the site of the future Seaway Transit Center.

A total of seven new traffic signal poles are being installed in this area, requiring travel to be narrowed to one lane in each direction on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Installing the signal poles will take a few weeks, but the new signals are not expected to be functional until spring.

Electrical work continues at the site of the transit center, placing light poles and a transformer.

Later this month, if weather permits, 75th St. should receive new sidewalks along the south side of the road. Meanwhile, workers will begin framing the mechanical building on the transit center site.

Seaway Blvd. is expected to remain completely open for the next several weeks.

Information about the Seaway Transit Center is online at www.communitytransit.org/seaway.

Construction Divided into Four Areas

The Swift Green Line will serve 34 stations at 16 intersections and two terminals.

Community Transit is building the stations in stages: underground utility work, concrete platforms, and finally the station structures. Stage 1 began in Area 1, the northernmost part of the route, and will generally move east and south. Subsequent stages will follow the same overall pattern, resulting in each station being touched several times over the next year.

Swift bus rapid transit provides quick, rail-like service, with fares paid at the station and passengers getting on and off the bus in about 10 seconds.

When the Swift Green Line connects with the existing Swift Blue Line at Highway 99 & Airport Road, it will establish Snohomish County’s first high-capacity transit network. The network will eventually include more Swift lines and Link light rail.

Swift Green Line will begin service in early 2019.
