Farewell snow!

City snow plows

A huge THANK YOU to our amazing Maintenance and Operations crews this week! While our recent snowfall didn't quite match up to last year's storm, our crews were still hard at work before and after the snow and ice, keeping our streets clear for commuters.

Crews started work several days before the first snowflakes fell, laying deicer on our main streets and worked through the nights applying sand and additional deicer once the frosty weather arrived.

While many of us were warm and toasty in our beds, these amazing teams were making their way through the city, street by street, to ensure a safe commute for us all in the morning.

Visit to Universal Nails

Universal Nails owners with mayor

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to meet husband and wife team, Dinh and Kim, owners of the Universal Nails salon on Outlet Collection Way.

Universal Nails has been in Auburn for nearly a decade but recently moved to a larger location on the west end of the mall complex. The move has allowed the couple to more than double the size of their business, expand the services they offer and upgrade their equipment to some of the newest technology on the market.

Because the new location was previously two separate stores, Dinh was also able to be part of the redesign of the store's interior during construction work. The facility now features elaborate ceiling designs and recessed lighting along with chandeliers and an illuminated nail polish bar that changes colors.

Congratulations Dinh and Kim on your growing business!

Welcoming Two New Officers

officer swearing in ceremony

On Tuesday afternoon, Chief O'Neil and I welcomed two new officers to the Auburn Police Department. Officers Kyle Bosshart and Maria Fernandes recently graduated from the police academy and were officially sworn in by District Court Judge Rhonda Laumann.

Officer Bosshart is a native to the area and served in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Afghanistan as a medic.

Officer Fernandes grew up in Kirkland and attended Gonzaga University where she earned a degree in Criminal Justice.

From here they will begin a three-month field training program before starting their first assignments on the APD force.

Welcome to Team Auburn, Officers Bosshart and Fernandes!

A Visit from Buena Vista Students

Buena Vista students

On Thursday, a group of middle school exchange students visiting from South Korea joined me at City Hall to learn a bit about Auburn and how local government operates in the United States.

The students are part of a sister school program with our local Buena Vista Adventist School that began in 2011. During our visit, the students were able to meet several of our police officers and shared recommendations for some of their favorite movies and music, including the best K-Pop bands to listen to.

During their 10-day stay, the students will be spending time learning alongside their peers at Buena Vista and visiting tourist attractions here and in Seattle.

Welcome to Auburn, Buena Vista sister students!
