Tragedy Strikes

This has been a challenging week for many in our City - for those impacted by the tragic loss of lives in two separate incidents that occurred on Thursday. To the families and friends who lost a loved one, our hearts go out to you. Please, rely on your network of friends to help you make it through this difficult time. For some, it may even mean that professional help should be sought. Here are some contacts that you might wish to consider.

For our first responders - the police and firefighters who are first on the scene of these tragedies, please, remember them as well in your thoughts and prayers. While they clearly have a calling to do the heroic work that they do, they are human. They have families and friends that they think about, and those families and friends pray for their safe return home at the end of a shift.

Independence Day

Emerald Downs Fireworks

Next week is the 4th of July, a time that we celebrate our Nation’s birthday. Please, be safe and think twice about discharging fireworks. Remember, “If it goes up or blows up,” it is illegal in the City of Auburn! The noise is always a challenge for those with PTSD, and also for our pets. We want everyone to enjoy the day, so let’s all be good neighbors!

Join us for our festival at Les Gove (910 9th St SE) on the 4th from 11:00am - 4:00pm! The event includes a noon bike parade (meet east of the bocce courts), various entertainment on two stages, arts & crafts, a car show, 17 inflatable rides, a rock wall, euro-buggy trampolines, train rides, bingo, bocce ball, delicious food and so much more! It’s a time for celebration, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Vegetation Maintenance Tips

With the 4th of July holiday just around the corner, our Code Compliance Team would like to take the opportunity to remind you of the importance of proper vegetation maintenance around your home and property.

Auburn City Code 8.20, vegetation management, limits the height of grass to six inches and requires that weeds, vines and other vegetation be well maintained. This is especially important during this time of year given the dry, summer weather conditions and the potential fire danger posed by fireworks.

Remember, anything that leaves the ground, or produces a report or explosion is illegal.
Any combination of two or more effects is
also illegal. Discharge of legal fireworks is
allowed on July 4th only, between the hours
of 9:00 AM–11:00 PM. Discharge is also
allowed from 6:00 PM on December
31, to 1:00 AM on January 1.

Farewell to our City Attorney

Dan Heid in Tux with Baby

Today was the last day for our City Attorney Dan Heid. Dan is leaving for a very well-deserved retirement after serving for 16+ years in Auburn. He has been a wonderful city attorney who has provided sage advice in the most difficult of situations.

He has a keen sense of humor - something that you don’t necessarily equate with a city attorney - that he brings out at just the right time. Sometimes it would make you pause before realizing he was joking!

On my first day as mayor, Dan followed my into my office and said “Mayor, we need to talk.” and it’s been like that ever since. I am amazed at how Dan keeps all of the issues straight, but he does, and has been a loyal member of Team Auburn.

In the Legal Department they have long celebrated “Bow tie Tuesday” and even though today was Friday, Dan wore a bow tie - along with a tuxedo! Leave it to Dan to go out in style!

Please join me in thanking him for his dedicated service. Farewell, Dan, enjoy each day, and don’t forget to come back and visit!

Farewell Mike Miller, a.k.a. Cheesecake Man

We also said goodbye this week to Park Maintenance Manager Mike Miller. Mike is retiring as well. Mike has been a valued member of our team for 30 years!

During that time, our parks system has grown from 14 parks to 34! That’s a lot of growth and a lot of family fun that Mike has contributed to. He has helped over 100 Scouts with their community projects that helped them achieve their Eagle Scout status. Mike is also a skillful baker, and has baked cookies and cheesecakes (one of his masterpieces is pictured above) for over 200 city-related events. I can attest to his baking skills - everything has been delicious. Mike even made all of the cookies for his retirement party!

Mike is planning to take trips, hike, and discover new things to keep him busy. All my best to you, Mike, and thank you!
