This week we have been saying farewell to two amazing public servants. Your Police Chief Bob Lee and your City Attorney Dan Heid are getting ready to enjoy their well-deserved retirements. I couldn't be more conflicted! I am so happy for them and equally sad for us at the same time.
These men have served your interests to the highest degree. Chief Lee spent his entire 37 year career with the Auburn Police Department and to retire as our Chief of eight years is an honor he truly deserves.
Attorney Heid has spent his entire career in public service to cities and we are proud to say he spent the longest time with us - 17 years, because as he said Monday night, "Auburn is a great place to work!"
I will not say goodbye, but only farewell because our paths will surely cross again!
Thursday evening we reconvened the Mayor's Task Force on Homelessness. We have done so much in the last few years in Auburn - we still have much to do but I can assure you that the people we have working on it have no intention of slowing down and neither do I!
The major topic of discussion among the group is that we need to do a better job of letting everyone know how hard we are working - and I agree. Here are a couple of things that will let you know what we are doing, how we are doing and what we plan on doing:
Auburn's data story: what do the numbers show? We use data to make better decisions. Here is one way we are doing that.
Task Force process and action plan: read about the action plan that we are working from and how it was created.
Ray of Hope Resource Center: watch a short video and hear the stories of the people that are utilizing our homeless services to better their lives.
I encourage you to join us in our efforts - it will make a difference!

"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it."

Each year we recognize one student from each elementary and middle school in Auburn with our KidsDay salute award. The kids are nominated by their school staff and principals for exhibiting hard work and kindness at their schools. Please join me in congratulating these students and their families for a successful 2017-18 school year. Auburn is in good hands with kids like these in our town!
