South Burlington City News

May 11, 2022   -    Local Government News Direct to You

Growth

Hello South Burlington,

As the weather warms and the buds pop, the feeling of rejuvenation, revitalization, and growth can be felt across South Burlington.  From spring sports starting up to new plantings around the City, it’s a great time to get out an connect with our neighbors and celebrate the coming seasons.  As we think about this yearly new growth, it’s also exciting to think about the growth happening in our business community.

The end of April and beginning of May saw a significant community and regional success with the expansion of BETA in South Burlington.  BETA, a cutting-edge company at the forefront of electrifying aircraft and addressing climate change is expanding in South Burlington.  When we found there were local hurdles to their expansion, City staff and elected and appointed officials worked quickly with them to address both permitting and land use concerns.  Together, we arrived at local solutions.  On April 26th the DRB issued their decision on BETA’s manufacturing facility.  And on May 2nd the City Council approve an amendment to the Land Development Regulations that would fix permitting challenges for businesses “inside the security fence” at the Airport.  Many folks worked to make this all come together.  To the staff of BETA, city staff, elected officials, appointed officials, and community members who played a hand in this success, I would like to share my and our thanks.

There are many other businesses growing here in South Burlington, providing great new employment opportunities for our residents and providing community vibrancy.  OnLogic is set to break ground on a new expanded facility on Community Drive this spring.  Eastern Real Estate and Taconic Capital Advisors took ownership of the University Mall in March and are working on plans to bring even more vibrancy to the site.  And, of course, the Alpine Shop has moved to Shelburne Road with a significant expansion of size and offerings.  Please join me in welcoming these developments (and many others underway in our business community) to South Burlington!

As always, if you have questions or ideas to share, please feel free to reach out to me at jbaker@southburlingtonvt.gov or at (802) 846-4100.

My best,

Jessie Baker

South Burlington City Manager

The City’s Climate Action Plan Task Force has been working hard this winter to put together the City’s first ever plan to tackle climate change. The goal, set by Council mirroring the State of Vermont and Paris Accord, is ambitious: to achieve 90% renewable energy use, and at least 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, by 2050.

Community Hike

Community Hike Series

All Things Spring: Ephemeral & Vernal Pools

May 14 | Red Rocks Park | 10 am-1 pm

Led by: Fred Konitsky, Vermont Master Naturalist

Join us for a hike where we will cover all things spring.  We will talk about vernal pools and their importance for amphibians, spring ephemerals and how their flowering strategy helps them survive, and how climate change could impact different species (i.e.: changes to migration patterns).

Come dressed for the weather, including layers, long pants and sleeves, and proper footwear.  Springtime weather in Vermont can be muddy and wet, so be prepared.  It is never too early to prepare for ticks, so consider appropriate tick prevention.

Children under 18 are welcome, but they do need to be accompanied by an adult.

Registration for this session will close by 3 PM the Friday before the event.
