Introducing the FY24 VA-SORH Grantees!
For 30 years, the VA-SORH has provided funding that bridges small, rural communities to state and federal resources with the goal of developing long-term solutions to address the root causes of rural health disparities. VA-SORH accomplishes this goal by awarding funds to grant sub-recipients or “grantees.” Each grantee utilizes the funding to implement innovative programming in rural communities across the Commonwealth.

The Power of Rural in Action: CDC & State Strategies for Rural Health
A recorded webinar that discusses the work of 3 rural health offices: the Center for Disease Control's Office of Rural Health, the Texas State Office of Rural Health, and the Virginia State Office of Rural Health. Focuses on how the offices implement programs, utilize collaboration and partnerships, and provide rural health resources.

FREE Continuing Education Credits to Physicians, APPs, RNs, and EMS Providers
UVA Health and Project ECHO are offering free CEs in the following areas:
Stroke Ready Primary Care- A year- long free virtual webinar series for Primary Care Providers to better understand stroke and management of risk factors. Sessions will take place 2nd Wednesdays at noon ET starting December 13th. (flyer)
Emerging Technology in EMS- Speakers from Hawaii, Texas and Germany are discussing how their EMS systems use technology to enhance pre-hospital emergency care. Remaining sessions will occur on December 11th and 18th at 4 PM ET. (flyer)

Nursing Students Bring Free Care to Rural Virginia with Student-Run Mobile Health Clinic
"Old Dominion University's new mobile clinic is bridging care gaps in underserved communities while providing clinical opportunities to nursing students.
The mobile clinic — housed in a two-room, 38-foot RV — currently offers free care three days a week at a variety of stops around Southampton County and the Franklin area. Locations include community gathering places, local fire stations, and schools."

RCORP: Helping Meet Rural Needs
Video series featuring the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy's Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP), a multi-year initiative that funds a range of grant programs to help rural communities treat and prevent opioid use disorder. RCORP grantees share how they have used this funding to address the needs of their communities including;

Rural Health Equity Roadmap
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health have joined with two philanthropic organizations with experience in minority communities – Well-being and Equity (WE) in the World and Well Being In the Nation (WIN) Network – to collaborate on guidelines for what it will take to bring health equity to rural areas.
Recommendations for Strengthening the Health Care Workforce in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Examines the healthcare workforce in Virginia through 2038, utilizing data on current workforce trends and projected workforce changes if interventions are implemented. Focuses on the nursing, primary care, and behavioral workforce and offers suggestions on retention, recruitment, and structural efficiency, with discussion on the health workforce in rural areas.

VA Announces New GME Program to Help Expand Health Care Access to Veterans in Underserved Communities
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has created a graduate medical education pilot program in an effort to increase access to healthcare for rural, tribal, and other underserved Veterans. 100 or more physician residents will be placed in non-VA facilities in rural and other communities beginning in July 2025.Click to edit this placeholder text.

Virginia Department of Health Workforce Incentive Programs
The Commonwealth of Virginia offers several incentive programs to attract health professionals to Virginia’s underserved areas. These programs not only assist with paying down outstanding medical education debt but also afford individuals an opportunity to become part of a community and provide care to deserving populations.

CDC Community Health Worker Services for HIV in Rural Communities
Application Deadline: January 5, 2024
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will provide grants to state and local health departments to partner with HIV clinical providers in rural areas. The program will utilize community health workers to engage people with HIV who are not virally suppressed.

Virginia Health Care Foundation Health Access Grants
Application Deadline: January 16, 2024
Most VHCF grants work to increase access to healthcare for uninsured Virginians and those who live in areas with limited access to care. Barriers to healthcare access take many forms and can be caused by a variety of factors. Grant applicants are encouraged to develop initiatives in the following areas based on their local needs:
- Developing or Expanding Capacity
- Establishing a Broader Scope of Services
- Accelerating Licensure of Behavioral Health Professionals
- Creating Local Coordinated Systems of Care
- Conquering the Consequences of COVID-19

Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: January 17, 2024
This program distributes$10,000in tuition assistance scholarships to medical students approaching their final year of school. With 12 scholarship categories and a variety of focus areas, including serving those underrepresented in medicine, the AMA Foundation works to recognize a diverse cohort of medical students each year.
Rural Health Network Development Planning Program
Application Deadline: January 26, 2024
Grants to plan and develop integrated health care networks that collaborate to achieve efficiencies; expand access to and improve the quality of basic health care services and health outcomes; and strengthen the rural health care system. This program supports one year of planning and brings together members of the health care delivery system, particularly those entities that may not have collaborated in the past, to establish and/or improve local capacity in order to strengthen rural community health interventions and enhance care coordination.

YouthBuild Grants
Application Deadline: February 1, 2024
Grants to organizations providing pre-apprenticeship services that support education, occupational skills training, and employment services for at-risk youth, ages 16 to 24, while performing meaningful work and service to their communities. The YouthBuild program model contains wrap-around services such as mentoring, trauma-informed care, personal counseling, transportation support, and employment. Applications from rural, urban, and Native American organizations are encouraged.
Rural Residency Planning and Development (RRPD) Program
Application Deadline: February 12, 2024
Grants to develop newly accredited, sustainable rural residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, public health, general preventive medicine, psychiatry, general surgery, and obstetrics/gynecology. The overall goal of the program is to support expansion of the physician workforce in rural communities.
