Prince William County is launching a Permanent Supportive Housing initiative for adults with serious mental illness and co-occurring disorders. The initiative will provide housing assistance funds, direct support to find housing units and mental health case management to help individuals secure stable and safe housing. The program, completely funded through the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, offers an opportunity for the county to deliver human-centered services that really address basic needs of those suffering from serious mental illness in the Prince William County community.
Prince William County is launching a litter prevention campaign to bring attention to the issue of litter in a fun and engaging way. The campaign includes videos and social media graphics showing Trashy the Raccoon creating havoc in the community with the tag line: “I’m a raccoon. “Adventure Begins at Your Library!” at Prince William Public Libraries with our exciting Summer Reading program. From June 10 to August 11, Summer Reading offers opportunities for readers of all ages to explore distant lands, solve mysteries and become the hero of their own stories. The Prince William County Office of Community Safety is looking for volunteers for the Community Safety Advisory Committee to help build the infrastructure that will shape the future direction and priorities of community safety initiatives. People who are interested in participating in the Community Safety Advisory Committee should complete the interest form by June 14.

The Virginia Cooperative Extension Prince William Unit is recruiting for the 2024 Master Gardener training session. Classes will focus on horticulture and related topics, such as plant and tree identification, soil health, growing vegetables, watershed function, integrated pest and invasives management, and more. This broad curriculum will not only augment your current horticultural understanding, but also prepare you to be a dedicated volunteer in your community. Information sessions will be held over the summer, and the training session begins in September.
Winners of the Prince William County Department of Economic Development and Tourism IGNITE Startup Grant program were announced at the annual Make Your Mark Business Community Celebration held May 16. The county’s signature entrepreneurial program provides opportunities for education, funding and networking during pivotal years for scaling startups and high-growth businesses. Each representative took home $100,000 for their company.
As June 14 marks Flag Day, the Prince William County Solid Waste Division is encouraging residents to respectfully retire their worn and tattered American flags by bringing them to the American Flag Collection Centers located at the county's disposal facilities, free of charge. Those who choose to retire their flags at a disposal facility can rest assured the county will dispose of the flag with dignity through a decade-long partnership established between the Solid Waste Division and Boy Scouts of America Prince William District.

More than 150 Prince William County employees and several of the county's community partners recently participated in a Poverty and Services Simulation Experience. Each person assumed the roles of people living in poverty and was provided with background information such as demographics, income level, employment status and other relevant factors. The primary goal of the simulation was to deepen understanding of poverty, create empathy for those facing economic hardship and promote awareness of the complexities of accessing social and community services.
This month, Virginia has a statewide Republican Primary for a U.S. Senate seat, and the 7th and 10th U.S. Congressional Districts will each hold both a Republican and a Democratic Primary for the U.S. House of Representatives.
