MSRB Retains Executive Search Firm
Bill Fitzgerald, Board Member and Chair, CEO Search Special Committee
The Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB) this year is seeking a new president and CEO to lead our team of 120 staff in advancing the organization’s mission of protecting municipal securities investors, issuers and the public interest. The Board of Directors created a CEO Search Special Committee and has recently retained global executive search firm Spencer Stuart to facilitate a broad, nationwide search.
Feedback from staff, municipal market participants and others will inform the search for the right candidate to shepherd the MSRB through a transformative period. The MSRB’s long-term strategy envisions significant investment in technology and data initiatives, sustained focus on effective rulemaking and compliance support, and continued emphasis on financial stewardship in support of a fair and efficient market. Read more about the MSRB’s FY 2020 priorities.
More details about the requirements of the CEO position and other information about the search process will be posted on the MSRB’s website as available. Inquiries and information may be directed to MSRB@spencerstuart.com and will remain confidential.
The Board named MSRB Chief Financial Officer Nanette D. Lawson to serve as interim CEO following the retirement of Lynnette Kelly after 12 years of service to the organization.

Highlights from the Board
On October 23-24, 2019, the MSRB Board of Directors convened for its first in-person meeting of Fiscal Year 2020. The Board’s standing committees and special committees met to set their priorities for the year and begin work, and the full Board discussed regulatory coordination and the organization’s cloud migration, among other topics. Among the new special committees is the Governance Review Special Committee, which discussed priority areas for its wide-ranging review of MSRB governance practices, including the size of the Board and selection of public and regulated members, which are established under MSRB Rule A-3. Read the meeting summary.
The Board also publicly outlined its priorities and finances for the year ahead through the publication of its budget. FY 2020 will be a year of transformation—regulatory, organizational and technological—grounded in our mission to protect municipal bond investors, issuers and the public interest.
