As students across Fairfax County get ready for a new school year, the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) wants families to know that help is available. School can bring stress, new challenges, and big changes, and our youth programs are here to support teens and caregivers. We offer several services that can make the school year healthier and easier.

Every year on August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) brings us together to take action on overdose in our community. This year’s theme is 25 Years On. Still Needed — highlighting the fact that we are making progress, but we need to keep going.
The good news is that future overdoses can be prevented. We know how to lower overdose risk and keep each other safe.
Use this toolkit to spread the word about resources, connect people to treatment and honor those we’ve lost.

Recently, we sat down with Donna Chittum, CSB Recruitment Specialist, to learn more about the Public Health Youth Ambassador Program (PHYAP) and what it means for Fairfax County youth who are interested in careers in behavioral health, developmental disabilities and substance use prevention and treatment.

Underage Drinking Prevention
The CSB's Wellness, Health Promotion & Prevention team offers "Talk. They hear you." presentations to help parents and caregivers start and sustain meaningful conversations about alcohol and substance use.
Learn how to spot signs of underage drinking, understand its consequences and discover practical ways to prevent it. Small, ongoing conversations truly make a big difference.
Training is offered on August 12, 2026, and September 9, 2026.

Building Resilient Communities
Groundbreaking research, including the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study, shows that adversity in childhood can strongly predict mental, physical and behavioral health outcomes later in life. The good news: what's predictable is preventable.

Training is offered August 10, 2026, and September 9, 2026.

Mindfulness is a simple practice with powerful benefits. Taking a few minutes each day to focus on your breath or observe your thoughts without judgment can reduce stress and improve emotional health.
Try a guided meditation or a mindful walk to start.
