Today wraps up our observance of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, but our mental health is an incredibly important part of our overall health, and critical in our ability to support our families, work effectively, participate in school, and contribute to society in meaningful ways. If you have not already, consider viewing the resources available Employee Benefits, BeWell Well-Being page and on the PWCS Mental Health Awareness Month webpage.
Kate Roscioli wins VCTM's Teacher of the Year
Kate Roscioli, Title I math specialist at Neabsco Elementary School, has been recognized with the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics' William C. Lowry Mathematics Educators of the Year award. Each year, VCTM recognizes a classroom teacher on the elementary, middle, secondary, university, and math specialist/coach level for his or her outstanding work in the field of mathematics.
"I am so excited to receive this award," said Roscioli. "As a math coach, I support teachers in engaging their students through number sense routines, rich math tasks, and inquiry-based learning. These strategies have helped our students find love and excitement for mathematics at Neabsco. I feel honored to be recognized for my work as a math coach at this level, and it helps me see that the work I am doing matters."

All certified staff: New Cultural Competency requirements are announced for 2022-23
During the 2021 General Assembly session, new requirements were set out in Senate Bill 1196 and House Bill 1904 to support a culturally competent educator workforce in the Commonwealth. For the 2022-23 school year, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will require the addition of Standard VI. Culturally Responsive Teaching and Equitable Practices to the Professional Educator Performance Standards and Standard VI. Culturally Responsive and Equitable School Leadership to the Educational Leader Performance Standards. Additionally, all certificated staff (holding a VDOE license) will be required to complete a VDOE module on cultural competency training prior to school beginning in fall 2022. Time during the August teacher work week will be allocated to fulfill the training requirements and a review of the new standards will be included in the required Annual Evaluation Process Meetings as part of the Professional Performance Process. Information and resources on these requirements will be forthcoming.
