Chalk4Peace
Our WSES annual Chalk4Peace event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29th. Chalk4Peace is an event that started in 2003 in Arlington, VA and now there are many schools from around the world that participate. Teachers will take their classes outside to draw their images of peace on the sidewalks and blacktops around the school. The Peace Book by Todd Parr (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3fcJ1P4OcY) is a wonderful book to read with your child and brainstorm what peace means to them. Ask them what peaceful images could they draw? Remember to send students in clothes that can get messy.
Heritage and Cultural Showcase
This year in our front lobby, we will have a Heritage and Cultural Showcase. This month (September 15-October 15), we will be highlighting Hispanic Heritage Month. If you are interested in contributing an artifact (picture, piece of clothing, story, etc.) to the showcase to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, please fill out the Google Form here and bring your artifact to the front office!

Twice Exceptional Students
Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. Twice-Exceptional (2e) learners are students who are both gifted and have learning challenges or disabilities.
Families can learn more about 2e learners, how to support them, and how to partner with schools on the 2e webpage, which also includes a link to the Special Education Handbook.
New information, including printable flyers, has been added under the heading Supporting 2e Learners in FCPS.

Our Focus on Academic Growth and Excellence
The FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.
The third goal is for all students to achieve academic growth and excellence. We want our students to have the academic skills to be successful, including reading on level by third grade. See how Goal 3 is being put into practice.

Advanced Academic Programs
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction. A continuum of Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services is available to students in Grades K-12 and is designed to match services to each student’s unique academic needs.
Identification for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services occurs throughout the school year. Full-Time AAP services have two identification cycles:
-
Fall identification: Students in grades 3-7 who have enrolled in FCPS since January may be referred by October 15, 2026.
-
Spring identification: Any FCPS student in Grades 2-7 may be referred by December 15, 2026.
FCPS uses ability testing as one consideration in the holistic identification process for AAP services.
- All students in Grade 2 take the Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT).
- Students in Grades 3-6 who do not have a multi-domain ability test score take the NGAT.
- Students in Grades 3-6 may retake an ability test one time. Families may request the ability test retake by contacting Caryn Seiler, School Testing Coordinator, at csseiler@fcps.edu by September 30.
Families are invited to attend an AAP information meeting, led by Caryn Seiler, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART):
-
AAP Continuum of Services & Full-Time AAP Identification: September 24, 2026 at 9:00 AM in the cafeteria. Families will learn about the continuum of advanced academic services available to FCPS students and the referral and identification process for Full-Time AAP services
